Five patients suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder and experiencing persistent intrusive imagery were treated with two sessions of relaxation training followed by two sessions of the visual-kinesthetic dissociation technique. Outcome was monitored using a multiple baseline design. Despite the briefness of the intervention, three of the patients showed an almost complete reduction in the frequency of their intrusive images and substantial changes on other measures of psychopathology. One patient showed partial improvement and one patient showed no improvement at all.
Public reaction to paedophilic behaviour is generally one of outrage, fear and anger, followed by a desire for revenge or punishment. The reaction from the paedophile is frequently one of withdrawal, denial, fear, secrecy and isolation. This may inadvertently be responsible for further victims by inhibiting requests for treatment. In the summer of 2000, a helpline was established in the northwest of England aimed at encouraging offending paedophiles, and those with the disposition to offend, to seek help and advice. This paper will assess responses to this invitation by reviewing the nature of these calls over an 18-month period.
We employed neurolinguistic programming (NLP) principles to develop a positive self-identity in an elderly male patient in England recovering from clinical depression. This novel technique encouraged recall of intrinsically rewarding past experiences. Each experience was conceptualized in an image and compiled chronologically in an imaginary book, providing continuity to what were chaotic and fragmented recollections during the immediate postdepressive stage. The patient's anxiety and depression were alleviated and his own functional goals largely realized.

Unlike the traditional psychofherapmtic relationship commonly marked by trust and a cfienf set agenda, the treatment ofpaedophilic behaviour requires the establishment ofclear boundaries and an explicit value stance in the early phase of treatment. This commonly produces a defcnsive reaction in the client, whose commitment to treatment is precarious at this stage. Challenge at this time can evokefears of humiliation or punishment and can reinforce thoughts ofwithdrawal from therapy. In order to address this issue andfacilitate the early phase oftreatment, a treated male sex offender in the role of a 'paraprofessional' was enlisted to co-facilitate a sex offender group treatment programme. The dynamics of the relationship between the professional, the paraprofessional and the perpetrators are described and the benefits and cautions ofusing a treated sex offender in this role are discussed.
