The increasing demand for electricity has raised the number of substations developed, one of them is 150 kV Duri Kosambi substation. The substation has a protection system that functions as a network safety system in the electric power distribution system caused by various kinds of disturbances, such as direct lightning stroke. The protection against lightning used in this 150 kV substation is ground shield wire (GSW). To determine the protection of the ground shield wire, it is necessary to design the lightning protection zone with the standard of Deutsches Institut fur Normung, Verband Der Elektrotechnik (DIN VDE) 0101, which is one of the largest technical-scientific associations in Europe originating from Germany. After obtaining the location and equipment's data of the Duri Kosambi substation, the radius of the protection area for various heights is calculated and the lightning protection zone is designed by using AutoCad. The result shows, that to protect equipments at a height of 13 meter, 9 meter and 5.752 meter, the radius of the protection area is 3.482 meter, 7.365 meter and 11.656 meter respectively. The results of this study indicate that all instruments in this 150 kV substation are in a lightning strike protection zone.
