Background: Spiritual support should be offered to all patients and their families regardless of their affiliated status with an organized religion. Aim: To understand nonreligious theistic parents’ spirituality and to explore how parents discuss death with their terminally ill children in mainland China. Design: Qualitative study. Setting/participants: This study was conducted in the hematology oncology center at Beijing Children’s Hospital. Participants in this study included 16 bereaved parents. Results: Participants described themselves as nonreligious but showed a tendency toward a particular religion. Parents sought religious support in the face of the life-threatening conditions that affected their child and regarded the religious belief as an important way to get psychological and spiritual comfort after experiencing the death of their child. Religious support could partially address parents’ spiritual needs. Parents’ spiritual needs still require other supports such as bereavement services, death education, and family support groups. Some parents stated that it was difficult to find a way to discuss death with their children. For patients who come from nonreligious theistic families, their understanding of death was more complex and may be related to atheism. Conclusion: Religious support could be an element of spiritual support for nonreligious theistic parents of terminally ill children. Multiple strategies including religious supports and nonreligious supports should be rationally integrated into spiritual support of nonreligious theistic family. Patient’s personal belief in death should be assessed before discussing death with them.
Lung epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays an important role in silicosis fibrosis. The reverse process of EMT is mesenchymal-epithelial transition (MET), which is viewed as an anti-EMT therapy and is a good target toward fibrosis. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as potent regulators of EMT and MET programs, and, hence, we tested the miRNA expression using microarray assay and investigated their roles in silica-induced EMT in lung epithelial cells. We found that miRNA-29b (miR-29b) was dynamically downregulated by silica and influenced the promotion of MET in RLE-6TN cells. Furthermore, delivery of miR-29b to mice significantly inhibited silica-induced EMT, prevented lung fibrosis, and improved lung function. Together, our results clearly demonstrated that miR-29b acted as a novel negative regulator of silicosis fibrosis-inhibited lung fibrosis, probably by promoting MET and by suppressing EMT in the lung. These findings may represent a new potential therapeutic target for treating silicosis fibrosis.
The purpose of the study is to provide a literature review of the work done on sign language (SL) around the world and in Pakistan and to develop a translation tool of speech and text to Pakistan Sign Language (PSL) with bilingual subtitles. Information and communication technology and tools development for teaching and learning purposes improve the learning process and facilitate both teachers and students. In Pakistan, unimpaired people face a lot of problems to communicate with deaf people due to the lack of SL understanding, learning resources, and interpreters. This problem is faced by the teachers who communicate with deaf students in the classrooms. The communication gap is filled with the development of a translation tool as Haseeb and Illyas concluded in their study that using this kind of tool, deaf people will have more opportunities to communicate with other members of society at every level. Different components of technology such as Python programming language, Natural Language Tool Kit, prerecorded PSL videos, Linux-based server, and databases are used to develop the prototype of PSL translation tool. This study provides a literature review to highlight the existing technological work done around the world and in Pakistan and also provides an architectural framework of the PSL translation tool which is developed by the researchers to facilitate the people who face difficulty to communicate with deaf people.
PurposeThis paper examines reasons of pragmatic functions' misinterpretation of three types of Facebook hashtags: long, short and multiple mixed hashtags.Design/methodology/approachFocus group interviews of 15 English language learners, who are also active users of Facebook and hashtags, are conducted. Thematic analysis is performed through the software Nvivo for arriving at reliable findings.FindingsThe findings show that unknown vocabulary in contents and lowercasing in long and short hashtags are major factors that cause misinterpretation. Also, the symbol of underscore and appropriate usage of upper and lowercasing of alphabets should be adopted in hashtag writing for the improvement in communication and successful conveyance of the intended meaning.Originality/valueThis paper contributes to the online hashtag writing style by finding reasons for the misinterpretations of different types of hashtags. Hashtags have been developed for adequate communication (Livingstone, 2012), but in Pakistan, hashtags are practiced as a “fashionable” trend and thus result in misinterpretation and inadequate communication among readers even of the same background (Tariq and Sarfraz, 2018). Moreover, this study focuses on the trend of hashtagging that is common among university students and particularly second-language learners because they are active users of Facebook and adopt the latest trends quickly.
