Myasthenia Gravis is a rare, chronic, acquired autoimmune neuromuscular disorder causing weakness in skeletal muscles. Patients with Myasthenia Gravis face many bio-psychosocial consequences that may require dramatic changes in their lives. The aim of this study was to determine predictors to health promoting behaviors among patients with Myasthenia Gravis using Health Belief Model. A predictive correlation research design was utilized to fulfill the aim of the study. Consecutive sample of convenience consisting of 57 adult male and female patients admitted for 21 months at one of Cairo University Hospitals, Egypt constituted the study sample. Data was collected using the following tools:(a) Demographic and Medical Background Data Form, (b) Glasgow Coma Scale to determine the conscious level of the potential participants, (c) The Adapted Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II tool to assess the health-promoting behaviors among the study participants and (d) the Health Belief Model Scale to assess the disease variables that were supposedly act as the predictors to health promoting behaviors among the study participants. Results showed that the majority of participants were female (78.90%), married (66.70%), educated (96.50%) and not working (91.20%), with a mean age of 33.96 ±9.81.
Background: The surgical supine position is the most common position used in the operating room. Even though, there are many risks to patients under anesthesia that result from supine position on the operating table. The aim was to investigate the relationship between surgical supine positioning and the related neurovascular injuries among patients undergoing elective surgeries. Question: What was the relationship between surgical supine positioning and the related neurovascular injuries among patients undergoing elective surgeries? Descriptive correlational design was utilized. Tools: I- Preoperative Assessment Data Form. II- Risk Assessment Scale for the Development of Injuries Due to Surgical Positioning III- Postoperative Neurovascular Assessment Form and IV- Numerical Pain Rating Scale. A convenience sample of 50 male and female adult patients over a period of 6 months; who had undergone elective surgeries and were positioned on surgical supine position and not suffering from neuropathy and neuromuscular diseases at one of Cairo University Hospitals, Egypt constituted the study sample. Results: There was a positive correlation between supine surgical positioning and postoperative neurovascular injuries among the study sample in relation to tissue perfusion, sensory alteration and postoperative pain as r = .503, .551 & .440 and p value = .000, .000 & .001 respectively.
Background: Bariatric surgeries have become the preferred option among obese patients worldwide. Knowing the patient’s point of view regarding the expected changes and satisfaction with bariatric surgery is necessary for improving care and outcomes. The aims of this study were to examine patients’ expectations and their satisfaction with bariatric surgery. As well as explore the factors that affect patients' satisfaction levels after bariatric surgery. Methods: Mixed research design was used on a convenient sample of 53 adult male and female subjects who had undergone bariatric surgeries. These tools were utilized to gather data: (a) Demographic and Clinical Data Form (b) Bariatric surgery patients' expectation questionnaire (c) Bariatric surgery satisfaction questionnaire and (d) Face-to-face open-ended semi-structured interviews. Results: The findings of this study revealed that 92% of the studied sample rated improved self-esteem as well as a reduction in clothing size as very important expectations. As regards patients' satisfaction level with bariatric surgery; 89.80% of the studied sample were very satisfied with the way they were seen by others as well as improved free physical movement. While 50.40% of the studied sample expressed dissatisfaction with the need for chronic medications. The three themes that emerged described the factors contributing to participants' satisfaction following bariatric surgery included 1) pre-post-surgery comparisons, 2) solving traumatic events; and 3) improved health parameters. Conclusion: Based on the results of the current study, the patient’s expectations and satisfaction following bariatric surgery were high. Hence, a preoperative education program is necessary to assist patients in developing reasonable expectations for the course of treatment and attaining complete satisfaction after bariatric surgery.
Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, poor hand hygiene compliance was observed among nurses, in spite of the fact that keeping hands clean is a simple, affordable method that reduces the risk of spreading health care-associated infections. The aim of the study was to investigate the determinants of nurses' non-compliance with hand hygiene practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. A descriptive exploratory design was utilized to fulfil the aim of the study. A convenient sample of all adult nurses who worked in the four randomly selected medical and surgical wards at a big teaching hospital affiliated with Cairo University Hospitals, Egypt. The following tools were utilized to collect study data: (a) Demographic and Background Information Form; (b) Hand Hygiene Practice Direct Observation Form; and (c) Determinants of Nurses' Non-Compliance with Hand Hygiene Practices Questionnaire. Results: As regards non-compliance rates, 69.2% of the study sample were not performing the opportunities, which were the five moments of hand hygiene. while 30.8 percent of them had performance concerns. In relation to the determinants of non-compliance with hand hygiene practices; 46.2% of the study sample complained of having a heavy workload and a lack of time; 41.5% of them had to take prompt actions and many procedures they had to do; and 40% of the study sample preferred to meet patients' needs rather than wash their hands. Conclusion: Regarding the studied nurses' noncompliance, more than two thirds of them were not performing the opportunities which were the five moments of hand hygiene. The most significant determinants of nurses' non-compliance with hand hygiene practices were their workload, lack of time, prompt actions, and many procedures they had to do. Recommendations: With the intention of turning knowledge into action, shifting attitudes into constructive behavior, and promoting proper hand washing procedures, ongoing monitoring and evaluation should be implemented.
