The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among metacognitive strategy use, motivation and listening test performance of EFL university students. The participants were 82 students majoring in English translation and literature at Allameh Tabataba’i and Shahid Beheshti Universities in Tehran, Iran. Data were collected using three instruments: MALQ (metacognitive awareness listening questionnaire), AMS (academic motivation scale), and the listening section of the TOEFL. After administering the listening section of the TOEFL (pre-test), students filled in the MALQ and AMS. A statistically significant correlation was found between metacognitive strategy use and listening performance, listening performance and intrinsic motivation, as well as metacognitive strategy use and intrinsic, extrinsic motivation
The aim of this study is to explore the effect of metacognitive strategy instruction on the listening performance of EFL university students. The participants were 82 students studying English translation and literature at Shahid Beheshti University. After screening the participants, 62 of them were selected and assigned to experimental and control groups. The experimental group (n=32) received the strategy training following the models proposed by Vandergrift and Tafaghodtari (2010) and O'Malley and Chamot (1990), while the control group (n=30) received no instruction. The listening section of the TOEFL was utilized to measure the listening performance of the participants before and after the treatment. The results revealed that experimental group significantly outperformed the control group on the post test measure.
Abstract-The present paper is an attempt to describe the process that was undertaken to evaluate the textbook English for the Students of Sociology: Social Science Texts taught at the University of Tehran. The purpose of this research project was to determine the overall pedagogical value and suitability of the book toward this specific language program. To achieve this goal, a questionnaire consisting of 20 items and examining 6 factors (practical concerns, materials in relation to course objective, subject matter, linguistic issues, skills and strategies, variety of tasks and activities, and the layout of materials) was used. Participants included 30 students of sociology, who were taking an ESP course at the University of Tehran. The findings indicated that the book, despite having merits, was not very suitable for the course. Suggestions regarding the kinds of activities, strategies, layout and other important issues are discussed.
This paper provides a review of ideas and research regarding the role of strategy use and strategy instruction in listening comprehension. Firstly, it provides a brief explanation of different models of listening comprehension. Secondly, it sketches out different categories of learning and listening strategies. Thirdly models of strategy instruction and different attitudes towards it are reviewed. Finally, empirical studies carried out to examine the role of strategy use and strategy instruction on listening comprehension is presented
Metal injection molding is a growing technology for producing complex metallic components. Preparation of feedstock for metal injection molding is a very crucial step during this process. This is because the deficiencies in quality of the feedstock once made, cannot be corrected by subsequent processing steps. One of the challenges in producing the feedstock is its formulation. In this study, the effect of the percentage of carnauba wax along with other binder constituents of paraffin wax, polypropylene and stearic acid is investigated on the density, strength, hardness and rheological behavior of a part, made of 4605 low alloy steel powder using metal injection molding process. For this reason, six binder systems including paraffin wax, polypropylene and stearic acid having different percentages of carnauba wax have been produced. After preparation of the samples, tensile testing, Vickers hardness test, density and rheological behavior of the samples have been measured and compared. The results show that carnauba wax as a part of feedstock, has a positive effect on the strength and density while negative effect on the hardness of the final sintered part. Also with the increase in the percentage of the carnauba wax inside the polymer binder, the viscosity of the feedstock was reduced significantly.
