Primary oral myiasis due to Chrysomya bezziana is a rare condition caused by invasion of tissues by larvae of the flies. A case of Oral myiasis is presented in a 12 year old boy with neuro-degenerative disease with seizures. Intra orally, a soft tissue pocket in the left buccal mucosa and a pocket under the palatal mucosa was seen containing maggots. Extra orally indurated erythematous swelling was present near the commisure of the mouth. Predisposing factors identified in the present case were mouth breathing, incompetent lips, low socioeconomic condition, malnutrition, and inability of the child to perform daily activities due to his neurodegenerative disease. Treatment consisted of manual removal of maggots following irrigation and application of turpentine oil along with a single dose Ivermectin 3 mg that was given systemically. Complete healing of the lesion was observed within 10 days without any recurrence for a follow up period of 1 year. Medical personnel taking care of old / debilitated / unconscious patients need to bear in mind the possibility of Chrysomya bezziana infestation in them.
The present study was conducted to investigate the endogenous erosive potential of some of the most commonly used pediatric liquid medicaments in our day to day practice. Eight commonly used pediatric liquid medicaments were selected and their endogenous pH was measured using a pH electrode meter. Twenty four exfoliated or extracted primary teeth without any carious lesion/restorations, maintained in selected pediatric liquid medicaments were observed under SEM after 1 min, 10 mins and 8 hours of time intervals. The pH ranged between 6.05 (Salbutamol) to 6.77 (Paracetamol) which were acidic, whereas Theophylline had a basic pH of 7.71. The irregular pattern of pit –like erosion area were seen in all specimens, varying from site to site and probably depending on the prismatic versus aprismatic nature and composition of the affected enamel. In conclusion, all the pediatric liquid medicaments used in this study showed an erosive effect on the primary enamel surface irrespective of their pH when viewed under SEM.
Objective: To evaluate the parents' view regarding factors influencing child behaviour in dental clinic. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted among parents who brought their children to the Paediatric Dental Clinic in Malaysia.Parents completed a close-ended questionnaire (n=274). The questionnaire was divided into 4 separate categories. The questionnaire assessed parental views on the following 4 parameters: dentist, dental clinical settings, dental treatments and child related factors. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: According to parent's perception, dental treatment plays the most significant role on a child's behaviour in the clinic when compared to other parameters. No significant difference between the "yes" and "no" responses for dentist, dental settings and child related factors as agreed by parents. Conclusion: Parental attitudes are constantly changing as the society evolves. So it is important to reassess their beliefs regularly and update our understanding of their attitudes. This will help to modify and shape the patient's attitude toward dental care and dental caregivers.
Findings of this study suggest that incorporating tools to identify the current emotional state would give a clue and allow the dentist to develop a behavior guidance plan to accomplish the necessary oral health care. However, the results are preliminary; studies with larger sample should be done to validate the results among diverse populations.
Hallerman Streif syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by dyscephaly, dental anomalies, proportionate nazism ,hypotrichosis, cutaneous atrophy limited to the head ,bilateral congenital cataracts and bilateral microphthalmia .Despite the marked craniofacial characteristics and oral findings, a relative lack of reports in the dental literature has been noted. In this article, a case of a 8 year old boy with dental problems is described.
