This article presents the main results of a thesis covering the morphological and architectural transformations of market towns and villages in the Gers area of Gascony between the middle of the 13th century and the middle of the 16th century. Its aim was to determine whether the “ crises” of the late Middle Ages led to a halt in the development of these small settlements that were intermediate points between towns and the countryside and which made up the living environment of the majority of the population in Gascony during this period. The implementation of the principles and methods of the general inventory of cultural heritage has made it possible to offset, in most cases, the weaknesses of sometimes incomplete written documentation and the virtual absence of archaeological data.
