The consequences of introducing Cichla cf. monoculus Spix & Agassiz, Astronotus ocellatus (Agassiz) and Pygocentrus nattereri Kner into lakes in the River Doce basin, Brazil, on richness, diversity and efficiency of aquatic macrophytes as natural refugia to native fishes was investigated. Samples were taken from lakes with and without alien fishes in areas with and without aquatic macrophytes. The presence of alien fishes reduced richness and diversity of the native fish community. The refugia function, which could be attributed to the clustering of aquatic macrophytes, does not exist in these lakes probably because the alien fishes exploit such habitats for reproduction. Since introductions threaten the native fish diversity of the region, studies on regional dispersion and factors that minimise the spread of alien fishes are needed.K E Y W O R D S : alien species, Brazil, habitat heterogeneity, River Doce State Park, tropical fish community.
Neotropical Entomology 34(2): 155-162 (2005) Restrições de Termoregulação sobre o Comportamento: Padrões em Uma Assembléia de Libélulas Tropicais RESUMO -As libélulas são classificadas comportamentalmente em voadoras e pousadoras com relação a sua capacidade de termoregulação. Libélulas de grande tamanho corporal devem termoregular de forma mais eficiente em locais com elevada irradiação solar, ao passo que libélulas menores dependem da temperatura ambiente. Neste estudo, foram realizadas análises de orçamento temporal de uma assembléia de libélulas para determinar como o tamanho corporal pode restringir a defesa de territórios e outros comportamentos. Baseado no orçamento temporal, foram observados três grupos de espécies. O primeiro e o segundo grupos abrangem espécies que permaneceram pousadas grande parte do tempo de atividade, entretanto espécies do primeiro grupo realizaram vôos de transição mais freqüentemente. O terceiro grupo conteve as espécies que foram observadas freqüentemente patrulhando seus territórios ou executando atividades reprodutivas. As espécies maiores permaneceram mais tempo em atividades de patrulha e defesa de seus territórios enquanto as espécies menores ficaram mais tempo pousadas. Libélulas maiores com maior habilidade de termoregulação puderam gastar mais tempo em atividades reprodutivas. A classificação das libélulas em voadoras e pousadoras é considerada extremamente útil, mas simplifica os padrões comportamentais observados entre espécies que têm grande variação de tamanho corporal. É provável que o contínuo comportamental associado com a variação de tamanho corporal, nos pousadores, possa explicar os padrões de interações entre espécies em comunidades de libélulas. Larger perchers could be more efficient thermoregulators in sunny sites and smaller perchers depend more on air temperature. In this paper, an analysis of the behavioral temporal budget of an odonate neotropical assemblage was performed to determine the role of body size on territorial defense and general behavioral strategies. This analysis revealed three groups based on time budget. The first and second groups contained the species that remained perched for most of the activity time, but species of the first group differ from the second group by the larger proportion of transition flights. The third group contained species which were usually observed patrolling or in reproductive activities. The larger species spent more time in patrol and territorial defense activities, while smaller species remained perched. Larger dragonflies, with better thermoregulatory abilities could spend more time in reproductive activities. Odonate larvae are important components of aquatic environments in tropical areas. They also develop in aquaculture ponds, where they can cause economic losses. In this study, we have tried to describe the general community patterns in aquaculture ponds in Viçosa, south‐eastern Brazil. Our aim is to evaluate how environmental and bionomic factors can determine their composition and species richness. We identified two groups of species (plants and bottom‐dwellers) based on larval microhabitat preferences. Vegetation determines the occurrence of some species whose adults select certain plants for oviposition. The ponds with more extreme conditions (extensive cover of plants or vegetation absent) showed lower species richness than those with intermediate conditions. Coryphaeshna adnexa and Brachmesia furcata were of larger size but had low abundance or were only collected accidentally. Species of intermediate size (Tramea cophysa, Micrathyria spp., Orthemis discolor and Erytrodiplax fusca) were more abundant and are considered as potential predators of fish fry.
The lakes in the middle rio Doce Valley (MG) are suffering impacts due to the introduction of invasive fish species, mainly piscivorous species like red piranha Pygocentrus nattereri and peacock bass Cichla kelberi. Fishes were collected in bimonthly samples conducted at ten lakes along a year. The present study showed that the composition of native fish assemblages is significantly related to the presence and type of non-native species. Fish species distribution among lakes can be explained by differences in species body size: smaller native species are less concentrated in lakes with invasive piscivores, which is in accordance with the hypothesis that they have greater susceptibility to predation by invaders. Another probable cause for this correlation is the proximity of lakes to the drainage system, which could explain both the non-native incidence and the turnover of native species composition. Furthermore, temporal variability in species composition was significantly higher in invaded lakes. This last factor may be linked to seasonal flood pulses, which carry immigrant fishes from streams in the vicinity. The metacommunity framework can bring insights for future studies in such spatially structured systems, and the approach should improve our understanding of processes underlying species composition as well as help direct conservation-focused management plans.Os lagos do Vale do médio rio Doce (MG) têm sofrido impactos devido à introdução de espécies invasoras de peixes, principalmente de espécies piscívoras como a piranha Pygocentrus nattereri e o tucunaré Cichla kelberi. Peixes foram coletados em seis amostragens bimestrais durante um ano. O presente trabalho demonstrou que a composição das assembleias de peixes nativos está significativamente relacionada à presença e ao tipo de espécies não nativas. A distribuição de espécies entre os lagos pode ser explicada por diferenças no tamanho corporal: espécies nativas de menor porte tendem a estar menos concentradas em lagos com invasores piscívoros, o que está de acordo com a hipótese de que tais espécies têm maior susceptibilidade à predação pelos invasores. Outra provável causa para essa correlação é a proximidade dos lagos ao sistema de drenagem, o que pode explicar tanto a incidência de não nativos quanto a variação na composição de espécies nativas. Além disso, a variabilidade temporal na composição foi significativamente maior em lagos com não nativos. Esse último fator pode estar ligado a pulsos de inundação sazonais, que trazem imigrantes dos riachos adjacentes. A abordagem de metacomunidades pode trazer ideias para futuros estudos neste sistema espacialmente estruturado, devendo melhorar nosso conhecimento sobre os processos que determinam sua composição de espécies e ajudando a direcionar planos de manejo para sua conservação.
