PURPOSE: Explore what entrepreneurship and success factors can help drive business to resilience and stability and achieve competitive advantage through innovation in different countries and business realities in the era of digital transformation and turbulent times. METHODOLOGY: Based on the narrative literature review, we present research findings concerning new strategies and outlooks for business innovation in times of many unknowns. Each organization wants to find its way to gain success and create its unique business model, which can capture value creation and innovativeness and be more adaptive, resilient, and stable in critical moments and sustainable over time. FINDINGS: The articles presented in this issue explore the essential factors of business innovation and success in different organizations and the environments in which these businesses function. IMPLICATIONS FOR THEORY AND PRACTICE: This article synthesizes the presented research field’s importance and relevance, connecting its theoretical background with practical research. Recommendations and implications for future trends of this research stream might also be helpful for professionals and academicians. ORIGINALITY AND VALUE: The novel studies presented in this issue were done in five different (developing and developed) countries and business sectors that present human-based and non-human-based factors as crucial factors needed to empower business transformation in a complex world. Each group of elements is essential in business success, and their components are interdependent. We need to look at the interactions and interdependencies of their components in a dynamic and network form and cannot simplify the reality, focusing only on one group of business components and ignoring the other. These unique studies provide a valuable outlook to establish dynamic, adaptive business pathways towards a sustainable and resilient organizational future and propose future research paths needed to execute structural changes in businesses.
To survive in the long term, business needs to profit, controlling environmental impacts with social responsibility. Sustainability programs involve the integration of social and environmental issues in business models and organizational processes. The assessment of sustainability programs is a problem of multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA). This work presents applications of MCDA for the assessment of sustainability programs in the textile industry. Applied methods for MCDA are analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and the technique for the order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). The reasons to apply AHP and TOPSIS include providing an assessment index, ranging from 0 to 1, and that the MCDA model is expected to have more criteria than alternatives. Therefore, an application of other methods, such as data envelopment analysis, could be prejudiced. Concepts from the triple bottom line, economic, social as well as environmental criteria were inserted in the proposed model. Sustainability programs of six leading companies from the Brazilian textile industry were evaluated. The main finding of the research is that AHP and TOPSIS resulted in similar evaluations for sustainability programs. Both methods resulted in the same rank of alternatives. However, with TOPSIS, companies' sustainability indices were more disperse, varying from 0.10 to 0.92 against a range from 0.23 to 0.69 with AHP.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced most countries’ higher-education systems to shift to distance learning, which has been called either “Corona Teaching” or, more formally, “Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT).” Students were suddenly faced with a new class format delivery and the many challenges of virtual education. The present study aims to identify and measure the challenges in three stages: (1) a qualitative method approach was used to gather the opinions of 50 students that were then analyzed and coded to identify their perceived major challenges; (2) a survey was completed by 165 students to prioritize the relative importance of the previously identified challenges using the AHP as the weighting approach; (3) an assessment framework was developed, using statistical techniques to measure the extent of the challenges for specific stakeholders based on survey responses. The main challenges students face are inadequate physical facilities at home, difficulties with the learning platforms, and financial concerns. These results are applicable beyond the present research context. For the first time, an ERT assessment framework of the challenges was developed using composite indicators derived from students’ opinions and perspectives. This ERT framework allows for the exploration of a community of students’ vulnerability to the challenges within the context of an emergency remote environment.
SUMMARYThe paper discusses an important, from the perspective of the development of peripheral areas, problem of migration among youth. The weakness of the potential of disadvantaged areas contributes to the strengthening of disadvantageous demographic, economic or cultural trends which, as a consequence, makes submontane areas of the Małopolska or Podkarpacie regions distant from large urban centers, being doomed to stagnation and becomes a push factor for next generations of their inhabitants. The phenomenon very frequently affects graduates and young people who, in the beginning of their professional careers, encounter considerable barriers on the Polish labor market. The paper analyses a potential scale of internal and external migrations, assesses the importance of factors determining the selection of migration destination and the importance of elements affecting the nature of jobs undertaken, taking into account payroll expectations of potential migrants. Consumption saving practices are the community response in cities to the crisis that hit Europe and has caused the reactivation and creation a new form of food cooperatives. Consumer cooperative movement has a long tradition in Poland dating back to 1816. The first consumer cooperative, "Mercury", was founded in 1869 in Warsaw, while the first food cooperative associations were established in the 1906. Political events in our country after 1945 caused the interruption of the cooperative tradition. The current model of food cooperatives, as informal initiatives is a completely new phenomenon in Poland. Such a society for the first time was established at the beginning of 2010. It was the Warsaw Food Cooperative. Currently, in Poland there are about thirty informal food cooperatives. Worldwide, cooperatives have more than 1 billion members. Agricultural and food cooperatives represent a significant portion of the global cooperative sector in developed and developing countries. The paper presents the application of the Analytic Network Process (ANP) in prioritization of crucial factors that affect stakeholders involved in food cooperative development. The research was made based on questionnaires with experts (members and owners) of "consumption oriented" food cooperatives in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship.
