Primary intraosseous mucoepidermoid carcinoma (PIOC) of the jaw bones
is an extremely rare malignant salivary gland tumor, comprising 2–3% of all mucoepidermoid carcinomas reported. It is commonly seen in the posterior part of the mandible; its occurrence in the maxilla is rare. They have been reported in patients of all ages, ranging from 1 to 78 years, with the overwhelming majority occurring in the 4th and 5th decades of life. They are histologically low-grade cancers and radiographically seen as uniocular or multiocular lesions. We report a rare case of PIOC in posterior palatal region in 18-year-old male.
The use of metals and their alloys in restorative and implant dentistry dates back to centuries. Titanium (Ti) is one of the most widely used biomaterial for medical implants because of its excellent mechanical properties and exceptional biocompatibility. The good biocompatibility of Ti is related to the thin oxide layer formed on Ti surface. TiO 2 is inactive with the surrounding biological environment and quite compatible with living tissues. However, TiO 2 layer can be destroyed during movements between implant and bone tissue under loading condition. The localized destruction causes corrosion of the implant, thus, weakening it; and can induce the leak of small metallic particles or ions into living tissues. This article highlights a review of the various aspects of corrosion and biocompatibility of dental titanium implants as well as suprastructures, and the methods to prevent it.
Aim/Objectives:To evaluate serum levels of Alpha-1 antitrypsin in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma and compare them with that of healthy subjects with and without tobacco habits.Materials and Method:The sample of 83 subjects was divided into three groups: 30 subjects with oral squamous cell carcinoma formed Group A. The age, sex, habit matched 23 healthy subjects with tobacco habit formed Group B and 30 healthy without history of consumption of tobacco formed Group C. Analysis of the samples was done using Alpha 1 antitrypsin kit and spectrophotometer.Results:There was a 2.33-fold rise in serum levels of Alpha 1 antitrypsin in Group A compared to Group B, 3.71-fold rise in Group A compared to Group C and 1.59-fold rise in Group B compared to Group C (P < 0.001). A definite rise in serum Alpha 1 antitrypsin levels in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma as compared with healthy subjects with and without tobacco habits was observed.Conclusion:Alpha1-antitrypsin can be used as an adjunct to various diagnostic procedures implied for the evaluation of oral squamous cell carcinoma.
