The study described here constitutes the second part of a larger project, which concerns the way school administrators dealt with issues associated with ethnocultural diversity and social justice in Greek schools. The paper begins with an extended bibliographic review on school leadership and multiculturalism issues. The second part presents the methodology, a case study strategy based on 50 semi-structured interviews, through which the authors attempted to investigate the administrators' perceptions, attitudes, and management strategies concerning the issues of pupils' ethnic variation in a Regional Unity of Northern Greece. The research focused on how administrators prepare themselves, teachers and schools to address the diverse needs of pupils; how they negotiate with pupils' parents and guardians; how school administrators contribute to the integration of "different" pupils and their families in the local communities.
This article is our third attempt to give out evidence resulting from a large-scale and revealing research that took place in a regional unity of Northern Greece. Our goal is to trigger speculation and dialogue inside the scientific community regarding aspects of foreign students’ cultural backgrounds and their attitude inside school. The article begins with a short theoretical frame, continues with the methodology and the findings, providing quotes that reveal a lot, especially after the recent alarming political upheavals in Eastern Mediterranean and ends with some excruciating questions intended to awaken native people’s conscience.
The present paper is built on data collected from our PhD thesis which addressed the burning issue of Women Leadership and which took the form of a census in the region of Western Macedonia and Thrace, which consists 10,7% of the total Greek territory and 5,7% of the Greek population respectively. More specifically, the information provided here resulted from the investigation of one of the seven topics that constituted our questionnaire and by which we tried to figure out the personal life of women-leaders in the Greek educational system, how they manage/cope with their multiple roles and responsibilities, whether their spouses are supportive (and if so how) or competitive. As with all studies, there are areas that I have been unable to tackle. One such area is the multidimensional issue of maternity. The latter will be exposed analytically in a forthcoming article.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
