Purpose The integral approach to risk is currently an important background for the local development processes within the sustaintability framework. Given the greater frequency and intensity of extreme climatic events in the period 2005-2015, whose inventory shows a total of 78 extreme climate events in the four thermal stations, the purpose of this paper is to analyze risk situations and their corresponding management in the tourist destinations (TD) of the Atlantic coast of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Design/methodology/approach Risk management in TDs has not been addressed in depth in the study area. Because of that, this study is exploratory and descriptive, and it was conducted by quantitative and qualitative methods. The occurrence of extreme weather events was the trigger of this study. Thereafter, the existence of risk situations was analyzed from the combination of natural hazards and material and human damage. The actions taken by the public sector were identified to make a diagnosis of the current management of coastal destinations in the province of Buenos Aires. Findings The result of this study shows that TDs do not apply integral models of risk management, as only 16% of the total registered events were attended by public management from reactive measures to the event. It is believed possible to replicate this study in other TDs, regardless of its main tourism modality, as the analysis carried out in the coastal destinations of Buenos Aires shows that it is necessary to plan and manage risk to avoid and/or mitigate material, social and economic damages of the resident and tourist population. Practical implications The main implication of the study, in practical terms, is associated with the incorporation of specific equipment for the detection of storms and other meteorological phenomena. In addition, it should start, from the management, with a process of awareness of the resident and tourist population about the risk and its consequences. Social implications Knowing the existence of natural hazards is a strategic resource for public management. From the identification of the hazards, exposure and vulnerability of the population, it is possible to begin to take measures to mitigate the risk and conduct awareness campaigns about the risk situations that may arise from the occurrence of meteorological phenomena. in beach areas. In this sense, the development of a culture of risk is very important. Originality/value The relationship between the occurrence of extreme weather events and tourism has not been addressed in depth in Argentina. Therefore, this work provides an interdisciplinary vision (from tourism and physical geography) about the hazards that extreme phenomena represent in TDs, the situations of risk that they detaches there and the weakness of public management in coastal destinations of Buenos Aires. This case study shows that the absence of planning and risk management has serious implications for the continuity of the development processes of the destinations.
La relación entre clima y turismo tiene implicancias en todas las escalas territoriales. No obstante, la sensibilidad climática del turismo varía según la modalidad y el tipo de actividad. Por ello, desde la perspectiva del confort, las características climáticas del destino son un recurso importante para la planificación. El presente trabajo evalúa el confort climático de la Argentina como recurso intangible para el turismo. El análisis se funda en el modelado espacial del Tourism Climate Index (TCI), calculado para 69 estaciones meteorológicas distribuidas uniformemente en el país. El TCI medio anual en la Argentina es de 73 puntos, indicando condiciones de confort climático-turístico “muy buenas”. Sin embargo, el comportamiento espacial del índice permite diferenciar una banda diagonal de máxima y dos regiones espejo definidas por una disminución de los puntajes medios hacia el NE y el SO. Esto se atribuye a la distribución espacial de los subíndices que constituyen el TCI. El confort térmico diario y la velocidad del viento influyen negativamente en Patagonia, mientras que en Litoral contrapesan los altos montos de precipitación. Estos hallazgos evidencian la importancia e interés de considerar al clima como un recurso estratégico en la planificación turística nacional.
The aim of this work is to analyze the determinants of tourist expenditure in Monte Hermoso, a destination located in the southwest of the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Tourist surveys were administered during the austral summer (January-February) and considered as primary information. Socioeconomic and trip-related variables were selected to explain the determinants of the average total expenditure of tourists in this destination. The Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method was applied. From the results obtained, it was determined that the level of income, origin, group size, and type of accommodation are the regressors that best demonstrate the spending behavior of the destination's domestic demand. Therefore, it is possible to identify the most attractive demand segments that contribute to improving competitiveness and increasing the rate of return of the destination.
El clima es un factor que condiciona las prácticas turístico-recreativas en espacios al aire libre. El bienestar y confort térmico constituyen exigencias del visitante susceptibles de evaluarse mediante la faceta térmica del clima. Este trabajo se aplica a Puerto Iguazú, un destino de clima subtropical húmedo. El mismo está estructurado con base en dos objetivos, por un lado, comparar tres índices bioclimáticos: Complejo Termo-anemométrico (P), Complejo Termo-higrométrico (THI) y Humidex (H), versus un índice climático-turístico: Tourism Climate Index (TCI) a fin de establecer cuál ofrece un mejor ajuste a la realidad estudiada. Por otro, a fin de generar información con mayor grado de detalle, se busca conocer el comportamiento en resolución horaria del P y H. El cálculo de los índices a nivel mensual (P, THI, H y TCI) se realizó con base en las estadísticas climatológicas de la estación Iguazú Aero para el período 1981-2010, proporcionadas por el Servicio Meteorológico Nacional. Los índices P y H en resolución horaria se calcularon a partir de datos meteorológicos de la misma estación para el período 2001-2010, obtenidos del sitio Meteomanz.com. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que la componente termo-higrométrica es la de mayor peso en el destino analizado, lo cual es coherente con sus características climáticas. La aplicación de los índices permitió determinar los momentos del año y horas del día más benignas para la realización de prácticas turístico-recreativas al aire libre.
El abordaje de la relación clima-turismo se ha expandido a través de la Climatología del Turismo, aunque las experiencias en destinos del hemisferio sur son escasas. Este artículo evalúa el confort bioclimático y climático-turístico de Mendoza, destino internacional de clima semiárido representativo de la región Cuyo. Se utilizó un enfoque cuantitativo basado en índices directos: bioclimáticos (complejo termo-higrométrico, complejo temo-anemométrico y temperatura equivalente) y climático-turísticos (Tourism Climate Index y Holiday Climate Index Urban). Para ello, se emplearon los datos medios mensuales de las últimas tres décadas disponibles (1981-2010). Conforme con los resultados, el verano es un momento crítico en términos del confort térmico. Sin embargo, según los índices climático-turísticos el destino es apto durante todo el año, aunque se contraponen con respecto al momento calificado como ideal para el turismo, poniendo en discusión su aplicabilidad en destinos de clima semiárido.
