Students’ acceptance to distance learning during Covid-19: the role of geographical areas among Indonesian sports science students

This study was conducted to investigate the perspectives of sports science students on factors affecting distance learning in the setting of Indonesian higher education institutions (HEIs). This study proposed an extended technology acceptance model (TAM) with eight variables; experience, enjoyment, self-efficacy, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, attitude, intention to use, and actual use. An online survey was used to collect data from 1291 respondents. The structural model was examined through the partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The multi-group analysis (MGA) was conducted to understand the role of geographical areas in moderating all hypothetical relationships. The findings show that the respondents were not excited about online learning due to weak means (below 3) for most items of five variables; enjoyment, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, attitude, and intention to use. All relationships were supported except the relationship between experience and perceived usefulness. The strongest significant relationship emerged between intention to use and actual use. Meanwhile, the least significant relationship was found between self-efficacy and perceived usefulness. Three out of 12 hypotheses were confirmed regarding the differences of geographical areas (rural and urban) regarding all relationship paths. The findings add to a deeper understanding of the acceptability of distance learning during pandemics like COVID-19.

The Role of Integrated Islamic Commercial and Social Finance in Reducing Income Inequality in Indonesia

Recent years saw the heated debates among prominent economists on the growing inequality in advanced economies, and accordingly, many solutions to this serious problem have been put forward. Among the practical-cum-workable solution is progressive taxation for wealth and income, especially the top one percent. Such a solution, however, has been implemented in Islamic perspective what so-called, zakah which is now referred to as social finance. In this paper, using the Gini coefficient data covering 34 provinces in Indonesia over a decade, we examine whether the role of social finance in tandem with commercial finance can adequately solve the problem of wealth distribution in Indonesia, one of the largest Democratic-Muslim countries in the world. Using the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) model, the results demonstrated that Islamic commercial finance solely is proven statistically incapable of tackling inequality while the social finance (zakah) is performing very well in this matter over all specifications. Most importantly, when both are incorporated in a model, the result showed a significant reduction in income inequality implying that the integrated Islamic finance which can be implemented in both Islamic microfinance institution and Islamic banking is more capable, as opposed to when both are separated, of helping address the income inequality problem in Indonesia.

This research is designed to empirically investigate the determinants of Islamic rural banking financing in Indonesia after 2008 global financial crisis covering period 2009.1-2014.12. The methods applied in this research are Error Correction Model (ECM) and VAR/VECM. The results of ECM model demonstrate that the variable third party funds (DPK) and non-performing financing can significantly affect Islamic rural banking financing both in the short run and long run, while Return on Asset (ROA) and Profit-and-loss sharing does not have a significant influence. Islamic rural bank financing, however, was influenced by inflation and exchange rate as the proxy of macroeconomic variables in the short and long run. Furthermore, Impulse Response Function (IRF) and variance decomposition results show that Profit-and-loss sharing (PLS) has the largest positive impact to financing (39.08%), followed by third party fund (19.6%) and inflation (8.9%). While, the variables that contribute to reduce financing are non-performing financing (9.02%), followed by ROA (7.76%) and exchange rate (2.48%).

Sejak diberlakukannya sistem perbankan ganda di Indonesia tahun 1998, Bank Indonesia mempunyai mandate baru untuk mengatur perbankan konvensional dan Islam di Indonesia dengan memberlakukan kebijakan moneter ganda untuk mencapai dan menjaga tujuan utama Bank Indonesia: Stabilitas harga. Dengan merekonstruksi model konseptual yang didasarkan pada Ascarya (2011), tulisan ini ditujukan untuk menguji secara empiris apakah penerapan kebijakan moneter ganda efektif untuk memastikan stabilitas harga yang tercermin dari inflasi yang rendah dan nilai tukar yang stabil. Metode yang digunakan dalam tulisan ini adalah Vector Autoregressions (VAR) Model untuk memberikan gambaran atas respon inflasi terhadap guncangan yang berasal dari kedua intrumen moneter tersebut. Hasil dari studi ini menunjukkan bahwa kebijakan moneter konvensional secara umum—ketika dibandingkan dengan kebijakan moneter Islam—membuat ketidakstabilan pada tingkat harga disebabkan penerapan sistem uang kertas selama ini yang sangat rentan terhadap krisis, sebagai konsekuensinya akan meningkatkan tingkat harga. lebih lanjut, sistem hutang, pasar uang antar bank dan fractional reserve banking yang semuanya sangat bergantung pada sistem bunga telah menyebabkan gejolak pada tingkat harga di Indonesia. Sebaliknya, gunjangan dari kebijakan moneter Islam terbukti mampu menodorong kestabilan harga karena semua instumen tersebut mampu menekan gejolak yang terjadi pada inflasi.
