Objective: Although the eyes occupy 0.1% of the total body surface, eye injuries are serious because vision is arguably the most important sense. We aimed to assess knowledge of Saudi Arabian residents regarding steps to be taken in cases of chemical eye injury, in order to promote awareness of such procedures. Results: A cross-sectional design was done. A random sampling method was utilized to select 888 individuals in the Saudi community. Participants completed an electronic closed ended, validated, anonymous, self-administered questionnaire. Two experts assessed content and face validity. Respondents were 18-29 years of age. 74 (8.3%) had a history of chemical eye injury. Regarding the first step taken in case of chemical eye injury, 697 (78.5%) respondents indicated washing with water, 164 (18.5%) indicated visiting the emergency department, 11 (1.2%) indicated using eye drops, and 5 (0.6%) indicated covering the eye immediately. Seventy-five (8.4%) respondents agreed that an eye injured with an acidic material should be washed with an alkaline solution. These results should be confirmed by health authorities and appropriate interventions should be developed for improving knowledge among masses, thereby promoting a healthier society.
Background: Congenital primary infections with Toxoplasma gondii, cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein–Bar virus (EBV), rubella, and hepatitis B virus (HBV) are viral infections transmitted transplacentally through the blood to the fetus and can be life-threatening. Therefore, we aimed to determine the prevalence of these infections and assess the cost-effectiveness of blood tests among pregnant women with positive serologies.Methods: This retrospective review was conducted among pregnant women with positive prenatal screening serology test results between January 2013 to July 2018. A p-value of <0.05 was used to calculate statistical significance.Results: Overall, 9095 pregnant women delivered in the last 5 years. Of these, 97 had positive prenatal screening serology and were enrolled in our study. Of 97, 61 (62.9%) were Saudis and 36 (37.1%) non-Saudis. The prevalence rates of rubella, CMV, EBV, and HBV were 78.35%, 59.79%, 14.43%, and 5.15%, respectively. Additionally, 44 of 97 women developed undesired antepartum outcomes, whereas 47 had adverse neonatal outcomes. CMV, HBV, and rubella were significantly associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes (P<0.005). During the study period, USD 1460228.27 was spent to screen 9095 pregnant women and USD 15573.68 to diagnose 97 pregnant women with positive serology.Conclusions: Because infections with toxoplasma, CMV, EBV, rubella, and HBV can cause serious risk to the mother and fetus during pregnancy. Thus, setting new hospital policies regarding early screening for high-risk pregnancies and early detection of these infections during prenatal visits are inevitable to avoid undesired outcomes.

IntroductionRheumatoid arthritis (RA) is one of the most commonly encountered autoimmune diseases. Treatment generally includes disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and/or biological therapy. However, a significant proportion of the patients do not respond to treatment either as a (primary failure) or lose efficacy over time (secondary failure). Several factors are assumed to influence these conditions. ObjectivesTo estimate the prevalence of failure of biological therapy in patients with RA and its causes. MethodsA total of 335 RA patients who were diagnosed at a tertiary center in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and had a failure after receiving biological therapy were included in this study. Several variables were considered; patient's socio-demographic data, comorbid conditions, types of biological therapy, the duration of using biological therapy in months, number of biological therapies, allergic reactions, disease activity, and treatment duration. ResultsOverall the prevalence of failure to biological therapy was 58%; 77% primary failure and 23% secondary failure. Patients with negative rheumatoid factor (RF) (p=0.006), using low-dose steroids, and with a longer disease duration had a significant failure of biological therapy (p=0.023). ConclusionA high percentage of RA patients had a failure of biological therapy. A multicentric trial is recommended to look for additional factors.
