Perkembangan teknologi yang pesat membuat hidup manusia lebih terasa nyaman daripada sebelumnya, hidup di era informasi membawa dampak turbulensi dan ketidakpastian dalam karir. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan konseptual bertujuan untuk mengetahui peran Planned Happenstance dalam perencanaan dan pengambilan keputusan karier siswa. Teori planned happenstance mendorong siswa belajar cara beradaptasi dengan perubahan kondisi di tempat kerja dengan menggunakan keterampilan terbuka (Planned happenstance skill ). Siswa dengan Planned Happenstance skill yang tinggi dapat dengan mudah menyesuaikan diri dengan hidupnya. Krumboltz memaparkan happenstance skill yang perlu dimiliki siswa : 1) keingintahuan (curiousity), 2) kegigihan (persistance), 3) fleksibilitas (flexibility), 4) optimis (optimism), 5) berani mengambil risiko (risk taking)
