In order to characterize human colorectal cancer, much attention has been paid to enzyme studies. However, little is known about the correlation between the levels of key enzymes of purine nucleotide pathway and some clinical and biological indicators of tumor invasiveness and aggressiveness. Adenosine deaminase (ADA) and 5'-nucleotidase (5'-NT) were measured in cancerous and cancer-free adjacent large bowel tissues from 38 patients with colorectal carcinoma. We have analyzed the relationship between the enzyme levels and some clinical and pathological parameters. The enzymes' activities were markedly higher in primary tumors than in corresponding normal mucosae. The ADA level in tumor tissue was significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis, histologic type, tumor location, and patient's age, whereas the 5'-NT level showed a significant correlation with tumor grade and tumor location. ADA activity in tumor tissues was significantly higher in patients whose clinical course remained stable than in those with recurrent diseases. The purine metabolism and salvage pathway activity of purine nucleotides are accelerated in the cancerous human colorectal tissue. Although our findings suggest that these enzymes' activities are most likely related to the same histomorphological architecture of the tumor, the authors believe that long-term follow-up studies are needed to evaluate the prognostic value of purine enzymes for colorectal cancer.
Hydatid cysts in the cervicofacial region are rare. We present an unusual case of a hydatid cyst found in the nape of a 66-year-old Turkish woman. There was no pulmonary or hepatic involvement. Excision of the cystic mass as definitive therapy was performed. The location of the lesion, diagnostic tests available and therapeutic approach are discussed and the literature reviewed.
Completion thyroidectomy is defined as the surgical removal of the remnant thyroid tissue following procedures less than total or near-total thyroidectomy. The extent of surgical management for differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) is controversial. Although some authors advocate subtotal thyroidectomy with lower complication rates, total or near-total thyroidectomy and completion thyroidectomy have been defended by others because of the improved survival and lower morbidity that is comparable with subtotal thyroidectomy. In this study, the incidence of residual tumor and surgical complication rates in patients who underwent completion thyroidectomy were investigated. The medical records of 165 patients undergoing completion thyroidectomy for DTC were reviewed. Seventy-seven (46.6%) of these patients were found to have residual tumor in the remaining thyroid tissue. Anaplastic transformation developed in two of these patients. Permanent bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy occurred in three patients, and permanent hypoparathyroidism was seen in one patient. We recommend completion thyroidectomy as an efficient and safe method of surgical treatment with a low complication rate for DTC.
Background. Two members of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) family, VEGF-C and -D, are known as lymphangiogenic growth factors and play an important role in tumor lymphangiogenesis via activation of the VEGF receptor (VEGFR)-3, which is expressed in lymphatic endothelial cells. D2-40 is a specific antibody for lymphatic vessel density (LVD).Objectives. In the present study, we have aimed to evaluate whether intra-and peri-tumoral D2-40-positive lymphatic vessels affect lymph node metastasis and to investigate the relationship between LVD and lymph node metastasis in breast cancer.
Material and methods.We have evaluated the relationships between lymph node metastasis and VEGF-C, VEGF-D, VEGFR-3 and D2-40 expressions in breast cancer cells using immunohistochemistry. VEGF-C, VEGF-D and VEGFR-3 expression were found in tumor cells in the majority of the cases (83.75, 97.5 and 95%, respectively).Results. There was a significant positive relationship between VEGF-D expression and lymph node metastasis (p < 0.05) however no significant association was found in VEGF-C and VEGFR-3 expressions. It was found that patients with high-expression of VEGF-D have a high level of both peri-and intra-tumoral LVD compared to those with low expression of VEGF-D (p < 0.05).
Conclusions.Our results support that examination of VEGF-D expression in breast cancer cells may be beneficial in the identification of lymph node metastasis.
