Categorical theory (e. g. Ekman, 1971) and dimensional theory (e. g. Russell, 1980) are popularly used to describe feelings and emotions. However these two theories have been largely ignored in gesture studies. One reason appears to be that the research has been based on of facial expressions and words, as such as not been applied to other studies. This research examined the relationships between feelings and hand movements. 106 students (53 pairs) participated in the experiment, where they talked to each other about various emotional themes, and then filled in questionnaires on their feelings. Their
During the Allied occupation of Japan after the Second World War, the Civil Information and Educational Section (CIE) Libraries played an important role in providing new foreign books and journals in the field of psychology. This paper first gives an overview of the history of psychology in Japan around the time of the Second World War. Subsequently, important excerpts from an oral history with Japanese psychologists are presented. Finally, based on information from this oral history, a survey of the books on psychology in the CIE Yokohama Library was conducted. Results of the survey indicate that CIE Libraries offered foreign books on topics in applied psychology, such as clinical psychology. The opportunities provided by this library had a profound impact on psychological study and practice in Japan. As many materials from this period are missing, including all books and journals from the CIE Hibiya Library, further research should include oral history from psychologists who visited these libraries.Key words: CIE Library, oral history, history of psychology, psychology in Japan. It is very important in the field of psychology to develop psychologists, both those who conduct research and those who practice as clinical psychologists. In the same manner as in other disciplines, students majoring in this field take required courses, read articles on psychological research, and write numerous reports on subjects pertaining to their academic field. Some of these students will become scholars and help younger psychologists grow in their studies and careers. The books and journals that students read have an important role in defining the course of psychology in the future.Today, university libraries in Japan have over 21,000 books and journals that have titles including the word "Shinrigaku" (the Japanese word for psychology) and over 80,000 that
Only a few Japanese psychologists have been interested in the history of psychology. The historiography-or the methodology of historical description-for the history of psychology has been ignored. Moreover, chairs for professors, academic journals, academic meetings, and an archive of the history of psychology remain to be established. In this paper, the history of the "history of psychology" in Japan is explored. This academic sub-discipline has emerged only during the past few decades and a theory driven historiography covering the history of psychology was initiated in Japan only at the end of the 20th century. Activities on the history of Japanese psychology can be divided into three phases: (a) the traditional history (translations and introduction of foreign knowledge and celebration of history); (b) the transition phase (the movement towards social criticism and archival research from intra-discipline); and (c) the history based on the historiography. Lastly, recent trends in the history of psychology in Japan are examined and discussed.
To examine whether emoticons are a proposition, as in language, or an image, such as a facial expression, 134 University students responded to a questionnaire to the effect of the typeface of an emoticon (two-byte Mincho vs. one-byte Gothic) and a line feed in an emoticon on the impact of the e-mail and receiver's emotion. The intensity of emotion when each script was read (sad, anxious, anger), and the intensity of their emotion after receiving messages with emoticons from a familiar friend was examined. Results suggested that the emoticon in two-byte Mincho typeface was related to a reported reduction of anxiety, as compared to one-byte Gothic typeface or a line feed in an emoticon, although the typeface of the emoticon or a line feed in the emoticon has no effect on the message relayed in the e-mail. Thus suggests that an emoticon is (1) neither an image but simply a proposition at the impact level, while at the same time (2) nor simply a proposition but instead an image at the emotion level.
