In the global media scene, media ownership is controlled by groups with political agendas. Intolerance of ‘the other’, from Islam and migrants to people of colour, show the rise of fundamentally prejudiced groups who relate well to negative media representations of ‘the other’, further fuelling financial support for dominant public voices, at the expense of those silenced by discrimination. Media studies on Islam show negative portrayals in Western media which neglect the Muslim voice. Some reasons include news culture, lack of knowledge about Islam and unawareness of the consequences from such narratives. This article identifies the growing trend of stories in the New Zealand media relating to ‘Islamic terrorism’ and critically analyses a random sampling of five news articles between 2014 and 2016 in terms of the negative, positive and ambivalent news content, both in their use of the written text and visual representations of Islam and Muslims. The tendency to use negative framing is evident with the absence or manipulation of the Muslim voice. Using the Islamic perspective of dialogue and persuasion, the theory of Ta’will, and socio-political rationale, the effects of and motivations for the written and visual news content are discussed. A case is made for a greater understanding of the textual and visual elements and more ethical reporting through intercultural engagement.
It is estimated that at least 15 million people worldwide live with severe deaf-blindness, with many more experiencing varying degrees of deaf-blindness. The existing options of assistance are mostly limited to walking canes, guide dogs and human care. We propose a wearable device which harnesses a multi-antenna mmWave radar transceiver and a haptic feedback array for real time detection of a person moving within a scene. We present our findings from a series of workshops with participants classed with multi-sensory impairments (MSI), to demonstrate the relative success of this approach and its potential for integration into existing assistance for the MSI of the future.
Shohamy (1989) delineated the basic components of research as introduction and statement of the problem or generally the topic, literature review, design, methodology, data analysis, and the findings. Accordingly, the present study categorized three main components of purpose, methodology, and outcome, which represents purpose as the statement of the problem, research questions, or the topic, methodology as the research contexts, data collection methods, and data analyses, and outcome as the research findings or results.
The author discusses digitization as video’s deficiency; pixels are conceived as isolated fragments without an existential link to the source image. This article explores the ontology of digital video through Mulla Sadrā’s (1571–1641) theory of Substantial Motion. Sadrā, a Persian-Islamic existentialist, proposed that substance (material/visible and immaterial/invisible) undergoes an internal change, creating intimate connections between the smallest parts and the One, visible and invisible. We can think of these dynamic connections in terms of pixels and frames. From the view of Sadrā’s substance, pixels are explored as open to change. The apparent weaknesses of digital materiality become potentials toward understanding its existence in time.
