The effect of androgen treatment on the thin epidermis of post-spawned winter Rounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus (Walbaum), freshly collected from an inshore population was investigated. Over the duration ofthe experiment, control flounders displayed epidermal thickening and increased goblet cell frequencies associated with captivity in this species. Treatment of males with 1 I-ketotestosterone induced significantly more differential thickening of the blindside epidermis. Compared with the controls testosterone treatment did not induce additional thickening of male epidermis, but it did increase differential thickening on the blind side of females.
