The descriptive anatomy of the lateral thoracic wall and the topographical anatomy of the fifth intercostal space are used as bases for the description of the lateral approach to the thoracic cavity without muscle transection, considered by the authors as a "standard" approach to the thoracic cavity.

Un rapprochement des deux extr6mit6s osseuses est souhaitable lorsque l'on a fait une simple symphysiotomie. Turner-Warwick (1972) en cas de r6section osseuse, comble la zone de r6section par un lambeau 6piploique, ce qui n'6vite pas cependant la possibilit6 d'une 6ventration, voire d'une hernie v6sicale [20]. I1 semble par contre que cette ouverture du cadre osseux ne provoque aucune g~ne ~t la marche.
