Maximum stacking fault energies for a-type stacking faults in the b.c.c. lattice are estimated for the group Va and VIa transition metals and iron. The half widths of glissile type split screw dislocations should be in all cases a t least one total Burgers vector.
The Peierls potentials of different types of crystallographic dislocations moving on : l l O ; glide planes are computed by means of various models and a systematic study of i~ 35" dislocation is carried out for different model series. It is shown that the original Peierls model can lead to qualitative errors concerning the structure of the Peierls potential and yields too small dislocation widths.
The possibility of intrinsic stacking faults in the b.c.c. lattice is discussed for a central force model. The existence of stable stacking faults depends on the cut-off radius of the interatomic potential. For rather small cut-off radii the model predicts stacking faults. However, we obtain stacking fault, vectors different from those predicted by the hard-sphere model. Further, the asymmetry of the stacking fault energy surface 6 with respect to displacements in h (111) directions depends on the cut-off radius.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
