Teachers are indispensable within the teaching -learning process. Hence, they constitute a major input in the accomplishment of educational goals and objectives in all nations. In Nigeria, teacher education has been bedeviled with a lot of challenges in the modern day technology of imparting knowledge in the teaching and learning process. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is relatively a very new development in Nigerian educational system. ICT plays a significant role in teacher education. Hence, the objective of this paper is to discuss the prospects of ICT in teacher education as well as its challenges in E-teaching profession in Nigeria. The findings via descriptive research revealed that many teachers in Nigeria are not using ICT facilities in teaching learning process due to some challenges which include high exorbitant price of ICT facilities, lack of infrastructures in the areas of electricity supply, lack of adequate trained manpower for the development, maintenance and operation of ICT facilities, lack of commitment on the part of government towards the development of ICT, inadequate funding of internet connectivity and lukewarm attitude of many teachers to be computer literate among others. This paper proffers some probable ways of improving ICT in teacher education in Nigeria. It concludes that the importance of ICT in teacher education to improve the quality of teaching and learning process in schools cannot be over-emphasized.
This paper discusses the challenges and prospects of repositioning secondary school administration for quality assurance in Ekiti State, Nigeria. In recent time, there had been a radical transformation of the education sector in Ekiti State part of which included the restructuring of the secondary school system. The senior and junior secondary schools were merged together to become a single school under the administration of a school principal. This paper examines the strategies used in repositioning secondary school administration for quality assurance by the state government. It highlights the challenges of repositioning the school administration based on the public outcry and the reactions of the school principals towards this new development. It x-rays the prospects of repositioning secondary school administration for quality assurance in Ekiti State to include high competency of secondary school administrators, removal of dichotomy between senior and junior secondary schools, unity and team work spirit among teachers, centralization of school policies, improved school infrastructures and facilities, and effective supervision of school personnel. The paper recommended among others that the Teaching Service Commission in Ekiti State should always consider performance, competency and years of experience in the appointment of secondary school principals.
This paper discussed quality assurance as the major print out of emphasis towards ensuring standard education in Nigerian educational system. It discussed supervision of instruction as the panacea for quality in the Universal Basic Education in Nigeria Schools. Objectives of UBE and the need for effective supervision of the Scheme were discussed System theory was used as the theoretical frame work in the paper. Strategies for effective supervision were proffered. Recommendations were made among which is provision of adequate facilities and efficient supervisors. Adequate funding of the scheme was also recommended.
