Since DeepMind’s AlphaZero, Zero learning quickly became the state-of-the-art method for many board games. It can be improved using a fully convolutional structure (no fully connected layer). Using such an architecture plus global pooling, we can create bots independent of the board size. The training can be made more robust by keeping track of the best checkpoints during the training and by training against them. Using these features, we release Polygames, our framework for Zero learning, with its library of games and its checkpoints. We won against strong humans at the game of Hex in 19 × 19, including the human player with the best ELO rank on LittleGolem; we incidentally also won against another Zero implementation, which was weaker than humans: in a discussion on LittleGolem, Hex19 was said to be intractable for zero learning. We also won in Havannah with size 8: win against the strongest player, namely Eobllor, with excellent opening moves. We also won several first places at the TAAI 2019 competitions and had positive results against strong bots in various games.
Choosing automatically the right algorithm using problem descriptors is a classical component of combinatorial optimization. It is also a good tool for making evolutionary algorithms fast, robust and versatile. We present Shiwa, an algorithm good at both discrete and continuous, noisy and noise-free, sequential and parallel, blackbox optimization. Our algorithm is experimentally compared to competitors on YABBOB, a BBOB comparable testbed, and on some variants of it, and then validated on several real world testbeds. Contextual bandit algorithms are applied in a wide range of domains, from advertising to recommender systems, from clinical trials to education. In many of these domains, malicious agents may have incentives to attack the bandit algorithm to induce it to perform a desired behavior. For instance, an unscrupulous ad publisher may try to increase their own revenue at the expense of the advertisers; a seller may want to increase the exposure of their products, or thwart a competitor's advertising campaign. In this paper, we study several attack scenarios and show that a malicious agent can force a linear contextual bandit algorithm to pull any desired arm T − o(T ) times over a horizon of T steps, while applying adversarial modifications to either rewards or contexts that only grow logarithmically as O(log T ). We also investigate the case when a malicious agent is interested in affecting the behavior of the bandit algorithm in a single context (e.g., a specific user). We first provide sufficient conditions for the feasibility of the attack and we then propose an efficient algorithm to perform the attack. We validate our theoretical results on experiments performed on both synthetic and real-world datasets.
Existing studies in black-box optimization for machine learning suffer from low generalizability, caused by a typically selective choice of problem instances used for training and testing different optimization algorithms. Among other issues, this practice promotes overfitting and poor-performing user guidelines. To address this shortcoming, we propose in this work a benchmark suite, OptimSuite, which covers a broad range of black-box optimization problems, ranging from academic benchmarks to real-world applications, from discrete over numerical to mixed-integer problems, from small to very large-scale problems, from noisy over dynamic to static problems, etc. We demonstrate the advantages of such a broad collection by deriving from it Automated Black Box Optimizer (ABBO), a general-purpose algorithm selection wizard. Using three different types of algorithm selection techniques, ABBO achieves competitive performance on all benchmark suites. It significantly outperforms previous state of the art on some of them, including YABBOB and LSGO. ABBO relies on many high-quality base components. Its excellent performance is obtained without any task-specific parametrization.The OptimSuite benchmark collection, the ABBO wizard and its base solvers have all been merged into the open-source Nevergrad platform, where they are available for reproducible research.
The task of image generation started to receive some attention from artists and designers to inspire them in new creations. However, exploiting the results of deep generative models such as Generative Adversarial Networks can be long and tedious given the lack of existing tools. In this work, we propose a simple strategy to inspire creators with new generations learned from a dataset of their choice, while providing some control on them. We design a simple optimization method to find the optimal latent parameters corresponding to the closest generation to any input inspirational image. Specifically, we allow the generation given an inspirational image of the user choice by performing several optimization steps to recover optimal parameters from the model's latent space. We tested several exploration methods starting with classic gradient descents to gradient-free optimizers. Many gradient-free optimizers just need comparisons (better/worse than another image), so that they can even be used without numerical criterion, without inspirational image, but with only with human preference. Thus, by iterating on one's preferences we could make robust Facial Composite or Fashion Generation algorithms. High resolution of the produced design generations are obtained using progressive growing of GANs. Our results on four datasets of faces, fashion images, and textures show that satisfactory images are effectively retrieved in most cases.
