AbstractBP's Northstar field, on the North Slope of Alaska, represents the first multi-well, new field development to incorporate downhole fiber optic pressure and temperature monitoring. Between 2001 and 2003, permanent fiber optic pressure and temperature gauges will be installed in 16 wells. This paper discusses the installation of the first 6 fiber optic systems at Northstar in the winter of 2001. All aspects of the installations will be described, including planning, logistics, run-in-hole during completion, and system commissioning. Elements common to and different from conventional gauge installations will be examined. In particular, special requirements for a fiber optic system installation in an arctic environment will be identified.

Certainly the size, location and access are the three most obvious aspects of the project. Drilling an 8400-acre oilfield from a 3.7-acre manmade island 6 miles out in the Beaufort Sea has presented some distinctive challenges. Many of these challenges were anticipated and addressed, while many others were not. Despite the unique backdrop of such an extreme location, Northstar is a great example of how Beyond the Best principles have been applied. From FEL (Front End Loading) to execution and implementation of the Technical Limit Process, the Northstar team employs proven processes to strive for performance that is truly beyond the best. New technologies have been applied, along with the learning's from GPB (Greater Prudhoe Bay), to great effect. The paradigm of Northstar is such, that without a coordinated approach by all functions of the project, from Facility engineering, reservoir management, logistical support, construction engineering to drilling, the project would have failed. With aligned goals, determination and excellent attitudes, Drilling has consistently produced best in class performance. This paper explores the Northstar paradigm in more detail, along with the logistical details of supplying for an accelerated Drilling Program during seasonal restrictions in a lay-down area equivalent to 50% of a football field.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
