This article is a case study of a young child's use of what is presumed to be a physical-psychological metaphor. The purpose of the article is to suggest that children can use this kind of metaphor when it is supported by meaningful context. Some speculation as to how metaphor may aid comprehension is offered. This article is a case study of a young child's extensive use of what is purported to be a physical-psychological metaphor. The article includes detailed biographical data pertinent to the attribution of metaphor use. In addition, it suggests that even young children (preschoolers) can recognize the resemblance between the physical and psychological dimensions when this recognition is mediated by contextually rich circumstanoes. (Gardner & Winner, 1978, in fact reported this effect.) This article also offers some speculation as to how metaphor may aid in the comprehension of intrinsically difficult concepts.
