Objective To describe the caring ability of family caregivers of children with cancer. Method This is a descriptive, exploratory study with a quantitative approach. A sample of 85 family caregivers of children with cancer was taken. After a characterization, they respondd to the Caring Ability Inventory adapted for family caregivers of people with chronic non-communicable disease. Results The family caregivers werecharacterized by age, gender, socioeconomic level, education level, family relationship with the care receiver, social support, time of experience, and burden of care generated by the degree of the receiver's illness. The overall caring ability was described, as well as the ability of each dimension, including knowledge, courage, and patience. Conclusions The principal family caregivers of children with cancer were mainly the mothers of the children with cancer. 70.6 % of them do not possess sufficient ability to take care of their children with cancer. 31.8 % of the group had a lower ability level. This finding, together with the demands of coping with the fact of having a child with cancer, can be a great burden to family caregivers and generate risk for the ill children under their care.

RESUMENObjetivo El estudio evaluó la efectividad del programa "Cuidando a los cuidadores", diseñado para fortalecer la habilidad de cuidado de los cuidadores familiares de personas con enfermedad crónica. Métodos Se utilizó un abordaje cuantitativo de tipo cuasiexperimental con grupos de estudio y control y medición de la habilidad de cuidado antes y después de la intervención. Se incluyeron en el estudio 250 cuidadores familiares. Resultados Los resultados incluyen la descripción de cada uno de los grupos de cuidadores estudiados en términos de sexo, edad, relación familiar, tiempo de cuidado y grado de dependencia de la persona cuidada. Presentan los niveles de habilidad de cuidado inicial y final de cada grupo y la comparación entre ellos. Se encontraron en los cuidadores similitudes de género y responsabilidad de cuidar a personas más jóvenes y diferencias en la procedencia, la funcionalidad de las personas cuidadas, la experiencia acumulada y la edad. La habilidad de cuidado fue homogénea en los grupos antes de la intervención, pero diferente en su totalidad y el componente paciencia al finalizar el programa. Discusión Los hallazgos ratifican lo señalado en la literatura sobre distribución de género, edad, asistencia en el hogar y baja habilidad de los cuidadores para responder a la tarea de cuidado de un familiar enfermo crónico. Objective: Develop a model of care for clinical the practice that allows for a continuous improvement in nursing care at the Fundación Santa Fe University Hospital in de Bogotá (FSFB). Materials and methodology: This is a descriptive methodological study developed in sequential phases that included: 1) identification of the need to have a model of care for nursing practice; 2) a characterization of the context and the desired scenario; 3) a literature review; 4) a description of the model; and 5) validation of the theoretical proposal. The study was conducted in 2016. Results: The global trend in the use of nursing models in clinical practice recognizes common aspects and emphasizes relevance, methodologies and different roles in their implementation. The context and projection of excellence for nursing at the FSFB necessitated the evident orientation of a model for the practice that guides care and responds to the vocation of service centered on the experience of human health. Conclusion: The model known as "Nursing Care with a Human Approach" helps to understand and communicate the essential components of nursing at the institutional level. It also develops parameters to measure and qualify nursing practice at the FSFB on a permanent basis.
