Background:The mission of every University is to educate professionals to improve the quality of well being of body and mind of the society's members. To approach this important issue, Universities needs healthy employee to enable them to educate healthy qualified and well trained. This study was aimed to evaluate the status of mental health of Semnan University of medical sciences employees.Material and methods:This is a descriptive- analytical performed in a cross- sectional study. Samples were 414 employee. data were collected trough a self - reporting questionnaire (GHQ-28). Data were analyzed by spss and also mean, standard deviation, absolute & relative frequency were detected. Chi-square, Pearson & Spearman correlation coefficient at the level of 5% and logistic regression analysis was used for analysis.Findings:Total of 28.6% suffers from mental disorder. The most were working in treatment setting (41%). People aged 40-49 were 29.3 %, women were 37.4%, University undergraduate 40.7%, not married single 60%, 20 or more year work experienced 35.2%, had the most prominent mental disorder. Interpretation logistic regression showed that index of gender, level of education, and occupation has significant influence over mental disorder.Conclusion:The degree of mental disorder is 2.5 more than the statistics reported by WHO, but is similar with those reported in Iran. More investigation needs to better understanding the higher prevalence of mental disorder among women, university undergraduate, government employee and those working in treatment setting. The result of these studies can lead to find solution to resolve this problem.
Background:The psychological impacts of acne appearance and its-related negative emotional reactions have been proved; however, these reactions are varied in different populations.Aim:We investigated whether acne and its severity affected psychological functioning in those who suffered from this disorder among Iranians.Materials and Methods:One hundred and six patients with acne vulgaris who consecutively attended the dermatology outpatient clinics in Semnan city in 2008 were included. Among them, 103 patients met the study's inclusion criterion and agreed to participate. One hundred and six age and gender cross-matched healthy volunteers were included as controls that attended the clinic with their diseased relatives. All acne patients were evaluated using the Symptom Check List-90 (SCL-90).Results:According to the American Academy of Dermatology classification, 25.2% of the patients had mild acne, 50.5% moderate acne, and 24.3% severe acne. A higher percentage of participants than controls required further evaluation and psychological consultant when studying each psychological problem. The most common psychological symptoms requiring treatment due to disturbed daily activities in acne group were psychoticism (34.0%) and depression (31.1%), respectively. Significant positive correlations were observed between the duration of illness and SCL-90 total score. When evaluating the SCL-90 scores, patients with multiple sites of involvement were affected more severely than those with a single site of involvement.Conclusion:Acne vulgaris has significant effects on psychological status. Effective concomitant anti-acne therapy and psychological assessment make significant contributions for the mental health and should be strongly recommended.
Background: Osteoporosis is one of the most common disorders in women, affecting the quality of life by having the increasing risk of fractures. There are no data on awareness of adolescent girls as a vulnerable group about osteoporosis. Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge concerning osteoporosis among high school female students in Semnan, Iran and to evaluate the effect of educational program. Methods: This pre and post-study was performed on 583 high-school female students, whom selected from 8 schools using multistage sampling. The study questionnaires were completed by interviewing students. All students participated in a single education session (about 2 hours) and the level of knowledge about osteoporosis, its risk factors and complications were assessed before and after education.
Background and Objectives: Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder is associated with many problems and several treatments have been proposed for the treatment of children with this disorder. The present study was carried out with the purpose of determining the effectiveness of play therapy and storytelling on the improvement of the symptoms of hyperactivity disorder/attention deficit disorder in students. Methods:The research method was pretest and posttest design with control group. At first, the Conners scale was implemented on 450 female students (age range, 7-12 years) in the schools of Semnan city. Then, 45 students who obtained the highest score based on the Conners scale, were voluntarily selected. In the following, these 45 students were randomly and equally assigned to two experimental groups of experimental (play therapy and storytelling) and control. Data analysis was performed using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and univariate variance analysis. Results:According to the results of MANOVA test, there was a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in the variables of hyperactivity, conduct, attention deficit, and anxiety [p≥0.005, F=(35.4)=17.22]. The results of the univariate ANOVA indicated that there was a significant difference between all studied variables, except for inactivity between the groups (p<0.005). Conclusion:The results of this study revealed that play therapy and storytelling have a positive effect on the improvement of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, thus, applying these methods can have beneficial results for students.
