Objectives: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) may develop with repetitive and forced movements of the hands and wrists. In this study, we have aimed to evaluate whether the frequency of CTS is increased amongst female hairdressers as compared with unemployed women or not. Besides, we have also analyzed whether the functionality and pain intensity levels amongst female hairdressers with CTS are different from the ones of unemployed women with CTS or not. Material and Methods: The consecutive female hairdressers and unemployed women who had referred to our electroneuromyography (ENMG) laboratory for the upper extremity nerve conduction studies were included. They were evaluated in terms of clinical and ENMG findings, socio-demographic characteristics, functionality and pain intensity levels determined with the Boston CTS Questionnaire and visual analog scale (VAS). Results: In this study, 110 women (70 female hairdressers and 40 unemployed women) were included. The frequency of CTS among hairdressers (74.3%) was higher than the one of the unemployed control group (55%) (p = 0.032). We detected that as the time period of occupation in hairdressing increased, the risk of developing CTS also increased among hairdressers (p < 0.001). Additionally, pain intensity and functional loss levels were higher for hairdressers with CTS than those for the control group with CTS (p = 0.005, p < 0.001, p = 0.028, respectively). Conclusions: The frequency of CTS is elevated for female hairdressers with respect to the unemployed women as in many other occupations requiring forced or repetitive hand movements. Besides, the occupational exposure in hairdressing also results in more elevated pain intensity and functional loss levels related with CTS as compared with the unemployed subjects. Chronic migraine causes a serious labour loss and disability in the society and increases the risk of depression and anxiety by negatively affecting the quality of life. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of onabotulinumtoxinA (BoNT-A) treatment on efficacy before and after treatment in our cases with chronic migraine as well as on depression, anxiety and disability caused by migraine. According to the International Headache Classification (ICHD-III beta version), 60 adult patients who were diagnosed with chronic migraine were included in the study. A total of 155 IU BoNT-A treatment from 31 regions was administered in accordance with the protocol of PREEMPT study. Information about the characteristics of patients' headaches, background and family history, drugs they used was recorded. At the baseline and in the first and third month after the BoNT-A injection, VAS scores, the number of both headache days and attacks, the headache duration, the frequency of application to emergency services and the intake of both analgesics and triptans during attacks were evaluated. MIDAS, BDI and BAI were evaluated at the baseline and in the third month after the BoNT-A injection. BoNT-A injection provided a significant decrease in the number of days and severity of headaches, MIDAS disability scores and psychiatric complaints in cases with chronic migraine who did not respond to prophylactic treatments in the third month of the treatment.
BackgroundStroke is a serious health problem all over the world. Ischemia causes 85% of strokes and 75% of these ischemic strokes occur within the area supplied by the internal carotid artery (ICA).Material/MethodsThis study included 47 acute stroke patients who were in the large-artery atherosclerosis group according to Trial of ORG 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST) classification and who had an infarct in the area supplied by the internal carotid artery. We sought to determine whether there was a significant correlation between the infarct volume of the patients as measured by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW MRI), their National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), and degree of carotid stenosis as identified by carotid computed tomography angiography (CTA).ResultsA significant correlation was observed between the percentage of carotid artery stenosis and infarct volume (p<0.001). In addition, there was a significant positive correlation between the NIHSS and infarct volume; the correlation was of moderate strength (r=0.366, p=0.001).ConclusionsOur findings indicate that the percentage of carotid artery stenosis could be useful in predicting the infarct volume of the stroke.
We present a Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patient who developed sudden bilateral vision loss after a bilateral occipital ischemic stroke and without a history of stroke risk factors. An 84-year-old man was admitted to the emergency room with bilateral sudden vision loss while receiving Favipiravir treatment for 5 days following a COVID-19 diagnosis. The patient had no history of stroke risk factors, such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, or arrhythmia. Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging of the patient revealed acute ischemia in the bilateral posterior occipital lobe and bilateral cerebellar hemisphere. We conclude that COVID-19 may rarely cause bilateral ischemic stroke presented only in the form of vision loss.
