The change of focus from the risk approach to the examination of health determinants has opened new research areas important to the development of health of adolescents. These approaches will, hopefully, eventually explain the development of health, and enable the young to enjoy a füll quality of life. Two key concepts are here presented, on the one hand, the concept of resilience stemming from psychology, and on the other hand, salutogenesis developed in sociology. Both these concepts try to explain how people can manage their lives in spite of difficult life conditions, as well, the two key concepts provide us with new instruments for health promotion action. Here, the concepts are analysed and weighted against each other. Although these concepts aim at the understanding of health development, one must understand that our knowledge today is not exclusive. It would perhaps be more important to change some of the fundamental conditions in respect to inequities in society, thus allowing sensitive adolescents to develop into full life capacity.
