Dedicated to Prof. Dr. A. SEEGER on the occasion of his 60th birthday 73Geometrical frustration exists in both metallic glasses and chiral nematic liquid crystals. Applying results from the Landau-Ginzburg theory of liquid crystals and from polytope models for the amorphous state, a frustrated free-energy density for metallic glasses is derived, It is expressed in terms of an order parameter that characterizes the bond orientation of neighbouring atoms.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
