AbstractAn analysis of soil-structure interaction of a construction with unsatisfactory foundation behavior along time is presented. Previous analyses by Rosa (2005) are briefly described considering soil x structure interaction in predicting foundation settlement. In addition, a new analysis is now presented, including the influence of the masonry in the soil-structure interaction. The predicted distortional settlements are analyzed in conformity with the observed damages documented at various moments of the construction lifetime. Kelvin's model was employed to represent the soil behavior along time. Notwithstanding the simplifications adopted and justified in the article, the results of the numerical analysis were able to reproduce the extent and spatial location of the damages. Such results show the relevance of a more realistic foundation analysis involving soil x structure interaction.
Soil-structure interaction analysis considering concrete creep and shrinkageInteração solo-estrutura: análise contemplando fluência e retração do concreto a Fluminense Federal University, Civil Engineering Department, , Niterói, RJ, Brazil; b State University of Rio de Janeiro, Structure and Foundation Department, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil. Abstract ResumoThe paper presents some results from Rosa's [1] research that aimed to verify the effect of creep and shrinkage of the concrete in soil-structure interaction. The construction consists in a 17 storeys building. It is set down on shallow foundation, in the central part of the construction, and steel piles, on the boundary. The structure was submitted to instrumentation during construction, including the monitoring of foundation settlements and columns deformation. It was possible to compare the structural design with a numerical refined structural analysis. Comparisons of the structural and foundation design with and without due consideration of soil-structure interaction are also presented. Finally, the different design assumptions were confronted with instrumentation results, both related to foundation settlements and to columns loading as well. Attention is pointed out on the effect of concrete creep and shrinkage in the soil-structure interaction analysis.
This paper presents results and analyses of the dynamic behavior of a small-diameter pile driven in very soft clay, with its tip embedded to a depth of 4.5 m with a clear distance of 1–1.5 m above a stiffer substratum. The research program included static and dynamic load tests performed over a period of 15 days, with blows from three different drop heights. The dynamic signals were analyzed using two different pile–soil interaction models. The performance of the dynamic models in predicting the shaft and base behavior of the model pile, as well as the change in bearing capacity and in some model parameters the dynamic with time, are addressed in particular.
