The changing demographics of the United States have lead to increased training of multicultural issues in graduate counseling programs. Graduate students report higher levels of multicultural competencies after completing a multicultural counseling course. Similarly, this study indicates increased multicultural awareness and knowledge among undergraduates completing a multicultural course. The changing demographics in the United States have pushed multicultural issues to the forefront of postsecondary education. The United States is becoming a country in which minority groups are becoming the majority of its citizens (Wakelee-Lynch. 1989). Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and Native Americans are becoming a larger percentage of the school age population (Manning, 1991). However, different age groups are becoming ethnically diverse at different rates. By the year 2000,80% of Americans over the age of 45 will be non-Hispanic Whites. In contrast, only 63% of children under age 8 will be non-Hispanic Whites. As younger generations mature, the United States will become more ethnically diverse (Riche, 1991). The recognition of increasing diversity in the United States has lead to more attention being directed toward understanding multicultural issues.Graduate programs in psychology and counseling are incorporating a multicultural emphasis in their curricula. Between 2 and 5 million young adults are involved in cult groups in the United States. Psychohistorical influences, family dynamics, and religious values affect an individual's susceptibility to joining a cult. Cult affiliation affects the cult member and his or her family members. Although cults have high conversion rates, they also have high rates of disaffiliation. Counselors working with those who join and leave cults need to develop an awareness of clinical symptoms associated with doing so and use appropriate interventions.
