The inability to learn to use speech effect tively may seriously impair the intellectual and social developnlent of yorrng children. While all children with severe limitations in learning verbal skills share some behaviors in corninon, careful analysis of certain other behaviors reveals par terns ow? responses that niitst be cmsidered in relathti to the specific diagriosis of "jailure to talk." Emphasis is on the diagnostic and treatment implications of difyerential language behavior patterns. The patterns of observed behaviors suggest differences in the loci and degree of damage anlong nonverbal children. These data provide valuable assistance in planning for clinical intervention.
