The capacity of penta sodium triphosphate (PST) to avert the steel reinforcement corrosion in contaminated concrete by NaCl was investigated for 480 days using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization, half-cell potential and gravimetric methods. The mechanism of interaction of PST molecules and the changes took place on the steel surface assessed using spectroscopic and microscopic analysis. Compression tests of the concrete specimens were performed to monitor the strength of concrete after the addition of PST. Investigations proved that PST acts as a competent admixture for inhibiting the corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete without affecting its strength for a longtime.
Schiff base 2,2’-(5,5-dimethylcyclohexane-1,3-diylidene)bis(azan-1-yl-1-ylidene) diphenol (DmChDp) was synthesized and characterized using spectroscopic methods (IR, UV, NMR, and Mass) and cyclic voltammetric (CV) studies. The corrosion inhibition potency of (DmChDp) on mild steel (MS) in 1M HCl and 0.5M H2SO4 was investigated. The corrosion monitoring techniques employed for this purpose are gravimetric and electrochemical methods (EIS and potentiodynamic polarization studies). The study reveals that the Schiff base, DmChDp, acts as excellent corrosion inhibitor on mild steel in 1M HCl. DmChDp obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm both in 1M HCl and 0.5M H2SO4 on MS. Polarization studies show that DmChDp behaves as a mixed type inhibitor in both media. Scanning electron microscopic analysis established the protective nature of DmChDp on mild steel surface. The impact of temperature on the corrosion of MS was also evaluated using gravimetric method.
Prolonged corrosion inhibition response of sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) on steel reinforcement in contaminated concrete was investigated by gravimetric method and electrochemical techniques such as potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Using half cell potential measurements probability of steel reinforcement corrosion was monitored for a period of 480 days. FT-IR spectroscopic analysis of the corroded products deposited on the steel reinforcement revealed the mechanism of corrosion inhibition. Modification in the surface morphology of steel specimens in the concrete was examined by optical microscopy. During the period of investigation (480 days), SLS showed appreciable corrosion inhibition efficiency on the steel reinforcement in concrete.
The corrosion inhibition efficiency of the Schiff base N,N’-(5,5-dimethylcyclohexane-1,3-diylidene)dianiline (DmChDa) on mild steel in 1M HCl and 0.5M H2SO4 was evaluated using gravimetric, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical noise measurement. Experimental results established that DmChDa possess relatively high corrosion inhibition capacity. Langmuir and El-Awady adsorption isotherms were obeyed by the Schiff base in 1M HCl and 0.5M H2SO4 respectively. SEM analysis showed that DmChDa was adsorbed on the steel surface during corrosion inhibition. The variation of metal dissolution with temperature was also examined using gravimetric study.
The corrosion protection efficacy of electrochemically synthesized poly(2-aminobenzenesulphonic acid) (P2ABSA) on carbon steel in 1.0 M HCl was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Tafel polarisation, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and FT-IR spectral studies. The polymeric coating was prepared on the steel surface using cyclic voltammetry. Investigations established that P2ABSA effectively prevent the metal dissolution in HCl medium. Polarisation studies revealed that this polymer hinder both anodic and cathodic process of corrosion appreciably. The structures of the chemically and electrochemically synthesised polymers were compared using IR spectroscopy. Morphology of the steel surface confirmed the intact response of P2ABSA on steel surface treated with HCl.
