A study of the species composition and a quantitative sulvey of the understorey (diameter at breast height, DBH < 10 cm) at a selected site of the Hurulu forest reserve, a Tropical Dly Mixed Evergreen forest, were carried out. Eighty one species representing 73 genera and 37 families were recorded. About 6% of the species were found to be endemic and 61% were found to be of medicinal importance. The density and the percentage frequency of the species were presented in two categories separately. Plants of DBH < 10 cm and height > 1 m were included in category 1 whereas the plants of DBH < 10 cm and height < l m were included in category 2. Glycostnis anglrsnyofia. attained the highest density of 163 per 100 m2 and the highest percentage frequency of 71 in categoly 1. In categoly 2 the same species reached the highest density of 33 and the highest frequency of 20. Therefore it was concluded that Glycosmis angt(~nYo1ia. was the most ecologically important species in the understorey of the Tropical Dry Mixed Evergreen' forest.
Wasgomuwa National Park (WNP) is the fourth largest National Park in Sri Lanka. Location of this protected area in between the intenoediate zone and dry zone hasr esulted in a mixture of vegetation types. The main objectives of this study were to determine the avifaunal diversity, distribution, and abundance in different habitats, and provide infonoation for the scientific management of the WNP.
