Present study made an attempt to examine the penalty of joblessness following coronavirus induced lockdown on income and remittances of inter‐state migrant labourers from Assam. The primary data for the study were collected through telephonic‐based survey of 451 labourers during May–June 2020. The results of this study showed that, on an average, labourers in the study area remained jobless for nearly 2 months and incurred income loss of INR 28,955 thereby failed to send remittances towards their families by an amount of INR 12,215 during the reference period. As per the analysis of covariance the income loss and remittances unsent amount was higher amongst the elderly labourers engaged in professions which remained non‐operational during lockdown period. Further, the additional days of joblessness increased their hardship in terms of income and remittances. With coronavirus being more than a health crisis, in short term it is necessary to minimise the loss of life, forwarding social and financial security for the families of migrant labourers and vulnerable sections for extended period of crisis, strategies for supporting agriculture and allied activities, promotion of small and medium‐size enterprises, imparting skill training for the unemployed and reverse migrant labourers, financial assistance for self‐employment may be helpful. Suitable coordination of monetary and fiscal policy would be helpful for reducing the unemployment heading from the recessionary trend of the economy in the long run.
This paper seeks to place the evolution of handloom weaving activity and its current scenario in Indian economy. Though the handloom weaving of India had a glorious past, the colonial regime shattered the hand spinning culture of traditional handloom sector of India and forced the country as the supplier of raw materials to Britain. Factory-made cheap cloths had replaced the Indian hand-woven fabrics within the country, and weavers lost their employment due to the shutdown of handloom units. Despite such adversity of handloom sector, Indian artisans had stood the test of time and had kept this great craft alive. The phasing out of the MFA has placed India in an advantageous position in international market for handloom.
PurposeThe present study aims at examining the determinants of occupational migration of unskilled labourer from domestic agriculture and their impact on farm business income (FBI) in Assam, India.Design/methodology/approachPrimary data for this study were collected during June–November, 2019 from 224 farm (cultivator) households in two contiguous districts in central Brahmaputra valley of Assam. The study used three-stage least square (3SLS) estimation technique for jointly determining the factors influencing migration and remittances and their impact on FBI.FindingsThe result of this study confirms that occupational migration of unskilled labourer from domestic agriculture significantly reduced household FBI. In contrast to the inflow of remittances from migrants helped in increasing the FBI. The migration in the study area considerably influenced by household size, total value of assets holding, networking influence, distance to commercial bank and flood proneness of the village; while the number of migrants, number of dependents and age of migrants seen to be strong predictor of inflow of remittances. Findings of present study offer evidence in support of the new economics of labour migration (NELM) theory.Research limitations/implicationsThe study is restricted to a single crop (paddy) and constrained by the collection of longitudinal data with a revisit to the farm household pre and post-migration of the unskilled labourer from household agriculture.Originality/valueThis paper is based on a novel data set that has especially been collected to examine the determinants of occupational migration from agriculture and their impact on the FBI in Assam that has not been studied before.
Epigenomic changes are commonly observed in cancer. We developed a next-generation sequencing (NGS) assay which can identify subtle changes in global methylation as well as copy number alterations (CNAs). The assay measures the methylation level of some repeat elements, covering over 25% of all CpG in the genome. Genomic DNA extracted from 18 pairs of matched colorectal tumor to normal tissue was tested (four adenocarcinomas, including one associated with inflammatory bowel disease, and fourteen adenomas, including one adenoma from a Lynch syndrome patient, one familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and two sessile serrated adenomas (SSA)). We also assayed organoids established from these tissues at early (2 month) and late (more than 6 months) timepoints in culture. Briefly, bisulfite conversion and enrichment of the repeats was performed. The Illumina compatible products were sequenced on a HiSEQ 2500. Analysis was performed using Bismark (Krueger F., Babraham institute) and Nexus copy number (BioDiscovery) to determine the global methylation and the CNAs, respectively. Finally, somatic and germline variants were determined by targeted sequencing of 71 genes using the QIAseq colorectal cancer panel (QIAGEN). Our data showed that all adenocarcinoma presented hypomethylation and CNAs as well as multiple somatic variants in APC, KRAS, TP53, SMAD4 and PIK3CA. Six out of the fourteen adenomas presented CNAs and nine showed hypomethylation. The most frequently observed copy number gain affected the chromosomes 8q and 13. Eight adenomas presenting somatic mutations in APC also exhibited distinct global hypomethylation. Previous publications have reported that mutations in APC precede global hypomethylation. Interestingly, one adenoma showed significant hypomethylation but no detectable CNAs or APC mutations. The two SSA samples showed the characteristic BRAF V600E mutations and the FAP sample presented germline mutation in APC. The FAP and the SSA samples did not show hypomethylation or CNAs. Most organoids presented CNAs and somatic mutations similar to their matched tissue even after 2 years in culture. However, few organoids developed new CNAs and somatic variants. Monitoring the changes in organoid may provide important information on tumor progression. This assay measured CNAs and methylation in colorectal cancer samples, findings which may assist in determining the status of the disease and provide guidance to the appropriate action. Our NGS assay interrogates a significant portion of the genome leading to a more accurate and sensitive evaluation of the state of these cancer cells. The study aims at examining the impact of outmigration of unskilled labourer from domestic agriculture on household income sources with farm level data collected from central Brahmaputra valley of Assam. The regression results confirm that outmigration of unskilled labourer from domestic agriculture is associated with the reduction in household income sources. However, the reinvestment of remittances partially offsets household’s loss of family labour effects through rising farm and off-farm income. Though, influx of remittances has not significantly increased household income, however, it has assisted in sustaining agricultural operation and other household activities. The findings of the study offer evidence in support of New Economics of Labour Migration theory. JEL: J21, J62
