The I S 0 Directory is a fully distributed system for informarion storage and retrieval of a global OSI network Owing to its complexity, the design and development of the Directory is generally laborious and the resultant somare system is largely di@icult to maintain. This paper presents an alternative approach, an object-oriented approach, to designing the Directory, which is able to minimize such shortcomings. The design is highly modular, based on object-oriented design techniques and incorporating object-oriented features of the Directory specifications which are given. in the Abstract Service Definition Convention.
