The educational field is seeing an increased growth in English-language teaching opportunities abroad. This situation gives rise to a number of interesting research inquiries. For example, can teaching experience in one cultural context translate well into another? What do studies tell us about cross-cultural awareness and effectiveness of those teaching abroad and their students' proficiencies? This article introduces readers to literature that, while not always within the direct scope of international education, is made relevant given the specific case of an American professor's teaching experience abroad in Southeast Asia. The article is a case study comparing systems and discussing various literature related to cross-cultural matters, while also proposing multi-disciplinary research paths to explore.
Abstract. For years, the world paid scant attention to the sporadic skirmishes and sovereignty squabbles in what is known by many as the South China Sea. However, in the past few years, there have been several noteworthy happenings that have drawn the attention of media outlets, including a Chinese oil rig placement near Vietnam, a Philippineinternational court case, a U.S.-ASEAN summit, and Chinese reclamation projects. Many of the countries involved are members of the regional grouping known as ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). This study examined Asean's English-language press, looking at the amount, patterns, and tone of coverage given to regional maritime disputes. Results indicate that use of the term 'South China Sea' prevails in all countries except Vietnam. The Asean newspapers have devoted a consistent and substantial amount of space to covering the topic. Indonesia's Jakarta Post tended to use neutral or positive language when mentioning Asean and the US, while China saw more negative associations in the coverage. Further research is suggested, taking into account mass communication theories and perspectives.
As economies in Southeast Asia develop, there is renewed interest in the impact such growth has on nature. This study seeks to investigate how environmental issues have been covered in the English-language press of the region. Are some countries providing greater print news coverage versus others? Are there detectable patterns or noticeable biases in the coverage? What sources are relied upon in the print media stories? And what frames do we see in the coverage? This study identified general coverage patterns of the environment over a 10-year period (2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012), in several of the region's English-language newspapers. News stories were analyzed to discern the nature of the coverage, coding for several variables as indicated by previous literature. Results indicate that use of the term climate change became preferred over that of global warming. In addition, coverage increased greatly starting in 2006. Government officials were most often the sources quoted within stories (Claims). Articles contained more "judgments" about the issue than "solutions" (Frames). Finally, though most articles eschewed mentioning a specific actor as causing climate change, "man" was implicated in a number of stories more often than simply "nature" (Blame).
