This study examines the relationship between gender and juvenile justice processing outcomes for status offenders. The feminist criminological concept of judicial paternalism suggests that official justice systems, as gendered institutions with traditional patriarchal norms, will treat delinquent girls differently than delinquent boys. This paternalistic effect should be especially prevalent for status offenses, which are used to enforce institutional (parental, school, civic, parochial) authority. Using 1999-2001 juvenile processing data for 3,329 status offense referrals to the Oklahoma Office of Juvenile Affairs (N = 3,329) and controlling for age, race, prior history, type of status offense, and measures of social class and urban environment, our results indicate that (a) girls outnumber boys among status offenders, (b) girls are more likely than boys to have their petitions filed for review, (c) girls are less likely than boys to be adjudicated guilty, and (d) girls are just as likely as boys to receive an incarcerated custody sentence as opposed to probation. We argue that these results illustrate the manifestation of the juvenile justice system as a gendered institution in which the adjudication of status offenders reflects judicial paternalism.
Sexuality researchers have traced changes in intimacy across time. In this article, I outline the facets of what sexuality researchers note as 'modern' sexuality and 'postmodern' sexuality. I discuss how each type of sexuality carries a specific construction of intimacy. I present five autoethnographic stories developed from my field journals while studying the swinging 'lifestyle'. Using thematic analysis of narrative, I treat each story as data for analysis. By discussing my personal constructions of intimacy I create a relatable story that demonstrates the lasting elements of essentialist gender norms, consistent with modern sexuality, that are sometimes overlooked in postmodern sexuality research.Hesitant, I slowly approached my destination. As I waited for the effects of the alcohol to kick in, I thought 'This is bad for research'. Still, the need for liquid courage was overwhelming. I glanced over at my partner and prayed that I appeared to be more collected than he was. He offered a weak smile. I nodded, and together we entered the dance hall. From the doorway, I soaked in the exotic atmosphere. The passionate smells of smoke, sweat, and sex swarmed around me. As my eyes adjusted to the dark setting, Trevor and I moved to an uninhabited corner of the hall.'Drinks, definitely more drinks,' I whispered to Trevor, who nodded and headed toward the bar. While waiting for his return, I turned my attention from personal anxiety to observation.Over one-hundred couples (all seemingly heterosexual) had already entered the dance, many of which seemed to be making rounds from table to table. Background: Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a chronic invisible illness characterized by orthostatic intolerance and increased heart rate upon standing (>30 beats per minute in adults and >40 beats per minute in adolescents). This study seeks to characterize the psychological distress in males who have been diagnosed with POTS. Males are diagnosed at much lower rates than females and are underrepresented in the literature. Methods: Forty-one male POTS patients responded to an online survey including the following instruments: acquired capability for suicide-fearlessness about death, beck depression inventory-II, interpersonal needs questionnaire-15, and the suicide behaviors questionnaire-revised.Results: In this study, 58.5% of men surveyed scored in high-risk group for suicide on the suicide behaviors questionnaire-revised. In a multiple linear regression analysis, perceived burdensomeness (β = 0.72; p = 0.001), age (β = -0.41; p = 0.001), changes in health due to chronic illness (β = -0.39; p = 0.05) and fearlessness about death (β = 0.35; p = 0.01) explained 50.7% of their suicidal behavior. Conclusions:In this small sample of men, perceived burdensomeness was the greatest predictor of suicidal behavior followed by fearlessness about death. Age and changes in health due to chronic illness seem to be protective against suicidal behavior. Therapeutic interventions, both medical and psychological, to decrease perceived burdensomeness could decrease the overall risk of suicide in men with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. Fearlessness about death and increased changes in health due to chronic illness as indicators for suicidal behavior may provide an alternative approach for intervention for some men with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.
