Edge analytics in the oil and gas industry has become an important topic, especially with the development of Industry 4.0. This paper reviews the existing literature regarding the movement away from traditional data acquisition and towards edge analytics. A meticulous, systematic literature review was conducted in order to understand how the industry would benefit from the implementation of edge analytics. It also aims to discover any advanced technologies belonging to other industries that could be of benefit to oil and gas. The result shows that edge analytics implementation in oil and gas industry has started to build evidence for its successful implementation at the wellsite. Various innovations from other industries may be useful for further enhancement of existing edge analytics or transforming existing data aggregation of data acquisition at the wellsite.
A strategy to develop an efficient and effective workforce is to discover and attract the best candidates from our host countries and provide them with the best method of knowledge transfer and more opportunities to be nurtured to be a part of the business growth in the current and prospective future of the company. Various methods of training have been introduced and conducted with different approaches, however not many of these techniques are successful in grooming the young talent to be a potential next generation of the global industry. The successful key of any training method is not only decided by the content of the training material, but there are some other factors that lead to the successful transfer of knowledge. The trainer can be a mentor and role model and a person that can motivate themselves and the trainee. This trainer should create a good ambience while transferring the knowledge so this process can be more effective, efficient and fun. Several other processes for transferring knowledge include: Self-Understanding – Delivery – the combination of visual, vocal and verbal. The delivering of information is not just about the content of what we say, but it is also related to how we say it, and the way we look when we say it. Vocal tone and body language of the non-verbal aspects influence the actual verbal message. This process also persuades the audience to follow a direction without denial. This can be done by creating a condition where the audience follows the direction because they are tempted with the effect offered in the statement. The strength of charisma from the trainer can also impact the success of this method. To provide opportunity and development of young local talent, some companies have been adopting a strategy of knowledge transformation method. The recruitment process is done by using a variety of tools/methods and other tests to assess the skills and the candidates' competencies. Then the usage of both formal and informal combination training is done to progress careers and employee excellence. This execution showed an overall increase in the knowledge transfer. The backing of this method has helped them to quickly contribute to their departments or organizations by handling their regular duties in a shorter period of time. Motivation is needed to attract the energy of young people so that the delivery of information can be done effectively and efficiently. When the process is well underway, the next thing is how the knowledge gained can be used in their professional lives so that it can be useful in developing their ability to be a more professional and dynamic workforce.
High-quality and completeness of real time drilling data have become critical factors to capitalize the improvement of data analysis for decision making. This paper proposes a combined architecture that supports edge computing technology with high frequency real time data to produce smart alerts as well as for the remote monitoring of real time data status for large number of rigs in a centralized location to enhance the surveillance of real time drilling data transfers. Unlike the traditional real time data surveillance method that monitors the data in the WITSML town server, this innovative technique analyzes the real time data quality right on the edge device. It offers smart computation to produce rule-based intelligent alarms for effective decision-making. This method delivers flexibility and effectiveness in WITSML real time data monitoring as it is fully independent from direct access to the WITSML Store. The biggest advantage of this approach is that it handles the remote surveillance of numerous rigs and gives absolute control over data aggregation. Managing sensitive drilling data has started to play a key role in cost optimization and critical decision- making, especially when running an active mission critical operation. The new approach of edge computing to analyze the WITSML data from its activity file at the rig site is a breakthrough in the real time data monitoring concept. A rule-based smart alarm system to check the statistics of real time data on the edge increases the confidence of the decision-making process as any data transfer issue can be detected faster. Further analysis and active monitoring of multiple rigs data transmission can be done by a centralized control panel, accessed from the real time operations center in town. Having a system with a precise method to actively monitor the status of real time data transfers on multiple rig sites and smartly generate alerts, assures end users to manage their well efficiently. Emphasizing the requirement to ensure the nature, quality and latency of real time information at rig site will reduce the lost and non-productive time overall.
This paper primarily is focusing on presenting the non-productive time overview and any kind of non-productive time that can be reduced by real-time data technology, real-time data transmission and visualization infrastructure which supports the processes of aggregation, transmission, and visualization; the example of multipurpose implementation and further innovation and improvements that can be made within the real-time data transmission and visualization, such as real-time reservoir footage calculation during geosteering and drill-time calculation to pick the formation tops and casing point; the challenges and limitation while using real-time data, such as VSAT and local network connectivity issue; and future target and improvement of real-time data usage especially to make an artifi cial intelligence system to predict the potential feature, such as formation or drilling problem while drilling. All of those stuff s could be found by literature study and direct professional experience while handling real-time data system. This technology will inspire the user to design their own solution for their operations. Despite the signifi cant advances on real-time data transmission and visualization, there is signifi cant room to fully use itspotential for advanced workfl ows and the usage of real-time data technology which was proven to reduce the Non-Productive Time that could save the operational cost. We believe that the utilization of real-time data transmission and visualization will defi nitely increase the effi ciency of the drilling operations, especially for multiple wells operations.
