The severity of the 2000 Samcheok forest fire was classified by using Landsat TM images, and the effects of vegetation structures and topographic conditions on fire severity were analyzed. The estimated normalized difference vegetation index differences between the pre and post-fire Landsat TM images were used as the criteria in determining the levels of fire severity-low, moderate, and extreme. According to the results from fire severity estimation, of the 10,600 ha forest stands, 28% was severely damaged by crown fires, 38% was moderately damaged, and the remaining 34% was damaged slightly by surface fires. The overall accuracy of the fire severity classification was 83% (Kappa coefficient = 0.76). The results of v 2 -tests showed that fire severity differed significantly with the vegetation and topographic conditions as follows. The coniferous stands, compared with the mixed and broadleaved, were more vulnerable to fire damage; the higher the slope of fire sites, the greater the fire damage; the south was the most vulnerable aspect; fire severity of coniferous forest stands increased with increasing elevation. However, in the study area it was found that fire severity of broadleaved forest stands were negatively related to the elevation of the corresponding fire sites and affected more by vegetation conditions rather than by topographic conditions.
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) mesh is one of the most commonly used synthetic biomaterials for tension-free hernia repair. In an effort to improve the biocompatibility of PET mesh, gold nanoparticles (AuNP) in various concentrations were conjugated to the PET surface to develop PET-AuNP scaffolds. These novel scaffolds were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to assess the addition of functional groups, presence of AuNPs, and thermal stability of the modified PET mesh, respectively. The biocompatibility of the PET-AuNP scaffolds was evaluated through in vitro cell culture assays. The cellularity of cells exposed to the PET-AuNP scaffolds, as well as the scaffolds' ability to reduce reactive oxygen species, was assessed using L929 murine fibroblasts. Antimicrobial properties of AuNPs conjugated to PET mesh were tested against the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Results from the FT-IR showed presence of COOH groups while SEM displayed bonding of AuNPs to the PET surface. DSC results indicated that the PET more than likely did not undergo any detrimental degradation due to the surface modification. Results from the in vitro studies showed that AuNPs, in optimal concentrations (1× concentrations), enhanced cellularity, reduced ROS, and reduced bacteria adhesion to PET. These studies demonstrated enhanced biocompatibility of the AuNP conjugated PET mesh over pristine PET mesh.
The anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody rituximab has significantly decreased the prevalence of antibody-mediated rejection of ABO-incompatible (ABOi) living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). However, little is known about acute kidney injury (AKI) following ABOi LDLT. The aim of this study was to identify the incidence of AKI in ABOi LDLT and compare it with that of ABO-compatible (ABOc) LDLT. We retrospectively collected and analyzed the data of 1617 patients who underwent liver transplant surgery from November 2008 to December 2014. Risk factors for AKI were investigated using multivariate regression analysis. In 271 ABOi LDLTs, AKI occurred in 184 (67.9%) according to Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes criteria. After propensity score matching, the incidence of AKI was significantly higher after ABOi LDLT than after ABOc LDLT (67.0% versus 48.2%; P < 0.001). Furthermore, the intensive care unit stay (P = 0.01) was significantly prolonged, but there were no significant differences in mortality (P = 0.74), graft failure (P = 0.32), and postoperative dialysis (P = 0.74) between the 2 groups. Hemoglobin level and operation time were independent risk factors for AKI following ABOi LDLT. In conclusion, the incidence of AKI is higher in ABOi LDLT than ABOc LDLT. However, the impact of AKI on postoperative outcomes was not marked in our study. Therefore, ABOi LDLT in selected patients is promising with apparent good graft and survival outcomes.
