Patterns of variation in the Eucalyptus globulus Labill. complex are reassessed by combining capsule measurements from an earlier study with recent collections, mainly of subspecies globulus. Four groups of populations are apparent and can be ascribed to the four subspecies maidenii, pseudoglobulus, bicostata and globulus. Intergrade populations between the latter three subspecies are widespread and mainly occur in the Otway Ranges and west Gippsland. There is a continuum in capsule morphology between the three-fruited subspecies, pseudoglobulus and bicostata. Subspecies globulus intergrades with these three-fruited intermediates. Three-fruited intergrade populations occuning north and south of the range of core pseudoglobulus can be differentiated and probably represent intergrades between pseudoglob~rlus and bicostata and between pseudoglobulus and globul~is respectively. Reports of bicostata in the Furneaux Group and southern Victoria are thus probably erroneous and result from convergence in capsule morphology. The previously described taxon E. stjohnii (R. T. Bak.) R. T. Bak. is part of the continuum between subspecies pseudoglobulus and bicostata, but closer to pseudoglobulus. Populations phenotypically intermediate between and significantly different from globulus and the three-fruited intergrades are highly variable and occur in western Tasmania, on the northern end of Flinders Island, in the Otway Ranges and in west Gippsland. An isolated population on Rodondo Island is highly variable and has closest affinities to pseudoglobulus despite being within the geographical range of core globulus. The population from King Island is intermediate between the Otway phenotype and core globulus. The climatic regimes of the subspecies are markedly different and most three-fruited and globul~cs intergrade populations have closer climatic affinities to pseudoglobulus and globulus respectively. Hypotheses relating to the origin of the pattern of variation in E. globulus are discussed.
Eucalyptus benthamiiMaiden & Cambage is a forest tree of interest for conservation and plantation forestry. It is vulnerable to extinction, occurring on the alluvial floodplains of the Nepean River and its tributaries, south-west of Sydney, Australia. These floodplains were largely cleared of native vegetation for agriculture by the mid-1800s. Flooding of the Cox Valley for Sydney's water supply further decreased the species distribution. The species is now confined to one population of approximately 6500 trees in the Kedumba valley and three remnant populations on the Nepean River at Bents Basin (about 300 trees), Wallacia (nine trees) and Camden (about 30 trees). Genetic analysis of the four populations using microsatellite markers revealed significant divergence among all populations, despite the Bents Basin, Wallacia and Camden remnants being separated by distances of only a few kilometres. Trees in these populations have been estimated to range from 35 to 200 years old, suggesting genetic divergence among populations occurred prior to land clearing. To investigate the impact of fragmentation on the next generation, outcrossing rates were estimated from 41 families. While no direct relationship was found between population size and outcrossing rates, fragmentation and the isolation of trees appears to have resulted in higher levels of selfing and biparental inbreeding in seed collected from the Camden and Wallacia remnants. There was also evidence from seedling morphology that inter-species gene flow increased with fragmentation since 20% of the progeny from Camden and 30% of the progeny from Wallacia were hybrids. Seed viability and germination rates were significantly lower in the remnant populations, reducing their value as seed sources for regeneration and plantation forestry. To maintain the genetic integrity of the remnant populations, germplasm should be sourced from the local area. Outcrossed, nonhybrid seed could be produced by controlled pollination in ex-situ conservation stands or by using seedling morphology and microsatellites to screen seedlings from the remnant populations.
Two series of Eucalyptus dunnii field trials were established at two locations in the north of Guangxi province in south central China between 1988 and 1991 to examine growth performance and genetic variation of trees from I 0 natural seed sources. After four years, mean heights in the trials ranged up to 14.2 m and mean diameters at breast height up to 12.0 em. Significant differences between seed sources existed for height and diameter and there were significant seed source by environment interactions in height and diameter across sites. However absolute magnitudes of differences between seed sources were small and changes in performance across sites were relatively unimportant. No one seed source showed absolute superiority at both locations across assessment ages. Seed source within the natural range is concluded to be of minor importance for optimising growth in plantations of the species though the variation within seed sources may be important for future domestication and tree improvement.
