The mainstay of treatment for patients with severe adenovirus pneumonia is still supportive, with the use of antivirals not apparently effective. Whilst ECMO support for rescue ventilation may be considered, the outcomes do not appear as promising as other viral pneumonias, mirroring that previously described in the paediatric population.
Rationale Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is applied as rescue therapy in patients who fail mechanical ventilation for Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). It is also associated with significant complications and mortality. We analysed the factors associated with mortality in a national referral centre. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients admitted to a single centre Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) from 2008 to 2019 who were supported with ECMO. Patient demographics, pre-ECMO parameters, ventilator settings, and patient outcomes were reviewed. Results
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
