An apparatus is described which detects ?-rays emitted by a thin target placed in a well-defined neutron beam. I t has been used to determine the Cd ratios of Au and Pu-240, from which the ratio of the resonance integral to the 2200 m/s cross section for radiative neutron capture in Pu-240 has been deduced, using ALI as a reference standard. Using this ratio and previously measured values of the resonance integral of PLI-240 and its effective cross section in two positions in the N R X reactor, three separate estimates of the 2200 m/s cross section of Pu-240 have been made. The mean value is 270f 17 barns.In an auxiliary experiment to indicate the shape of the epithermal spectrum of the neutron beam, the activation Cd ratios of M n and In were compared with that of Au. These results, combined with the Icnown 2200 m/s capture cross sections of these nuclides, yield new values of the radiative capture resonance integrals for both Mn and In.'NIanuscript
Experiments are described comparing the effects of neutrons slowed down in paraffin wax at the temperatures of liquid nitrogen and liquid hydrogen with those obtained at ordinary temperatures. It is found that the absorption produced by certain substances increases as the temperature is lowered. The transformations produced in these substances also increase, but generally to a smaller extent, probably owing to more neutrons being absorbed in the paraffin: the exact figure depends on the thickness of the layer of cooled paraffin.A few experiments were also made substituting liquid hydrogen for paraffin wax (without change of temperature). The effect of this also appears to depend on the thickness of the layer, but it is not yet possible to draw definite conclusions.
