Guidelines are given for users of the simple Yes/No signal detection experiment, who want to design their experiments to ensure a given precision for estimators of d. Additionally, simulations of small‐scale Yes/No and rating‐method experiments are employed, to investigate when the use of asymptotic results is justified. Finally it is shown how the pay‐off matrix for the Yes/No experiment may be manipulated in order to optimize precision.
A general conclusion is that quite large experiments are needed in order to provide precise unbiased estimation of d, with sampling distributions which are not appreciably skewed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
