Introduction: Studies conducted among fishermen shows that there was a high prevalence rate in Oral mucosal lesions. However, data on oral health care needs among fisherman is scarce. Hence this was undertaken to obtain a data that can be used to plan programmes for the prevention and treatment of such oral mucosal lesions in the fishermen. Materials and Methods: A study was carried out among 71 fishermen after obtaining clearance from the institutional ethical committee and concerned authorities. A self administered questionnaire is distributed among the study group comprising questions relating to personal history and deleterious habits. Clinical examination was carried out using mouth mirror, explorer and under proper illumination. Oral health examination was done using WHO Basic Oral health Assessment proforma, 2013. Data collected and analysed statistically using SPSS software. Results: Among the 71 fishermen, 56(78.9%) were males and 15 (21.1 %) were females. In the study population, 44(62%) were tobacco chewers, 39(54.9%) were snuff users, 24(33.8%) were alcohol consumers and 19(26.8%) were smokers. Smokeless tobacco (41.5%) was the most common deleterious habit after which by alcohol consumption (33.8%) and smoking (26.8%).The prevalence of oral mucosal lesions was 20.8%.It was found that statistically significant association existed between the deleterious habits and leukoplakia. Conclusion: According to the our study, the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions was 20.8% among the fishermen who had a clear association with deleterious habits such as tobacco chewing, smoking, alcohol consumption and snuff.
Thirty-six infants who developed grade III and IV intraventricular hemorrhages during the neonatal period were followed up to determine their developmental quotient. All of these infants had ventriculomegaly and 15 of them required a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt during the neonatal period prior to discharge from Intensive Care Nursery. The mean developmental quotient for the infants with the VP shunt was 67.93. The mean developmental quotient for the infants with ventriculomegaly but no VP shunt was 88.71 (P less than 0.02). Among the nonshunted group of infants, 13 (61.9%) had developmental quotients greater than 85, and among the shunted group 5 infants (33.3%) had developmental quotients greater than 85. Fifty percent of the total group of infants had normal developmental quotients at a mean chronological age of 16.25 +/- 7.5 months (and corrected age 14 months). Infants developing posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus and requiring VP shunts had a poorer developmental outcome compared to those who did not require shunts.
Routine panoramic radiographs often reveal hidden lesions other than those related to the patient's chief complaint [1]. The study aims to determine the prevalence of incidental radiopacities in panoramic views. There are several conditions where calcifications can occur in soft tissue, including major and minor salivary glands, lymph nodes, and blood vessels, such as sialolith, phlebolith, exostosis, dystrophic calcifications, etc. [2]. Interpretation of panoramic radiograph should consider the possibilities of soft tissue calcification super-imposed in bone. Three hundred and sixty (360) panoramic radiographs are included in the study. The prevalence and distribution of radiopacities were documented along with the probable diagnosis. In addition, statistical analysis was done by SPSS software to evaluate the age and gender-related distribution of radiopacities in panoramic radiographs.
