A case is described in which massive development of pseudopolyps resulted in left colonic obstruction in a patient with a history of ulcerative colitis. Problems of diagnosis and management are discussed, with emphasis on the need for close radiographic and endoscopic follow-up of such patients.

Monitoring biochemical processes relevant to the function, survival, and longevity of tissue‐engineered pancreatic constructs is important for the development of an optimum construct design as well as patient care management after implantation. In this report we demonstrate the ability of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques to monitor aspects of intracellular metabolism, overall morphology, and distribution of a microencapsulation based bioartificial pancreas in vitro and in vivo.

Between January 1996 and September 1997 we treated 4 patients with iodine-induced thyrotoxic storm (2 females, 2 men; age 54-77 years). Iodine contamination was due to iodine-containing contrast media in 3 patients and iodine-containing disinfectant in 1 patient. Thyroid storm with tachycardia, hypertension, sweating, tremor, weight loss and coma occured 3-10 weeks after iodine contamination. These symptoms were accompanied by raised fT4- and fT3-values. All 4 patients were initially treated with antithyroid drugs for 7 days, whereas 2 patients with coronary artery disease, demonstrated by coronary angio-graphy, were treated with antithyroid drugs for 2 weeks. Because of unsuccessful antithyroid drug treatment, all 4 patients underwent subtotal thyroidectomy. There were no perioperative complications. We conclude that early thyroidectomy is the appropriate treatment for iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis even in patients with severe accompanying diseases.

This paper presents Tiltification, a multi modal spirit level application for smartphones. The non-profit app was produced by students in the master project “Sonification Apps” in winter term 2020/21 at the University of Bremen to learn how to conceptualize, implement, market and test smartphone apps. In the app, psychoacoustic sonification is used to give feedback on the device’s rotation angles in two plane dimensions, allowing users to level furniture or take perfectly horizontal photos. Tiltification supplements the market of spirit level apps with detailed auditory information presentation. This provides for additional benefit in comparison to a physical spirit level and for more accessibility for visually and cognitively impaired people. We argue that the distribution of sonification apps through mainstream channels is a contribution to establish sonification in the market and make it better known to users outside the scientific domain.

The marked diagnostic advantage with a high evaluation confidence level in comparison with conventional X-ray methods justify the use of MSCT during postoperative monitoring of articular radial fractures treated with osteosynthesis.
