Objective To examine the use of two different mobile diet self-monitoring methods for weight loss. Methods Overweight adults (n=81; mean BMI 34.7±5.6 kg/m2) were randomized to self-monitor their diet with a mobile app (App, n=42) or wearable Bite Counter device (Bite, n=39). Both groups received the same behavioral weight loss information via twice weekly podcasts. Weight, physical activity (International Physical Activity Questionnaire), and energy intake (2 dietary recalls) were assessed at 0, 3, and 6 months. Results At six months, 75% of participants completed the trial. The App group lost significantly more weight (-6.8±0.8 kg) than the Bite group (-3.0±0.8 kg; group×time interaction: P<0.001). Changes in energy intake (-621±157 App, -456±167 Bite; P=0.47) or number of days diet was tracked (90.7±59.2 App, 68.4±61.2 Bite; P=0.09) did not differ between groups, but the Bite group had significant increases in physical activity METs min/wk (+2015.4±684.6; P=0.02) compared to little change in the App group (-136.5±630.6; P=0.02). Total weight loss was significantly correlated with number of podcasts downloaded (r=-0.33, P<0.01) and number of days diet was tracked (r=-0.33, P<0.01). Conclusions While frequency of diet tracking was similar between the App and Bite groups, there was greater weight loss observed in the App group.

What does this study add• Expert recommendations for exercise and physical activity for children and adolescents are consistent across numerous professional organizations: 60 min a day of exercise is recommended, with a combination of aerobic, muscle strengthening and bone strengthening activities being idea.• Recommendations do not provide guidance on family-based physical activity, or include developmental considerations, leaving clinicians with little in which to provide family-based physical activity interventions.• Experience of one paediatric obesity program provides guidance on incorporating family-based physical activity into treatment. SummaryTargeting physical inactivity in children is pertinent to aiding in the decrease of childhood obesity rates. Only 33% of adolescents are obtaining the recommended goal of at least 60 min of physical activity per day. The objectives of this review are to summarize professional recommendations for physical activity and exercise in children and adolescents, and identify family-centred strategies that can be implemented by weight management clinicians. Clinically oriented recommendations and policy statements from professional organizations were identified through literature and internet searches, summarized using rubrics of aerobic, muscle strengthening and bone strengthening exercise, then examined for details on family-based focus, inclusion of child developmental stage and age, and application to the prevention and treatment of obesity. Current recommendations give guidelines for the amount of physical activity that children should acquire and how many days a week activities should occur. However, available guidelines need an improved approach to addressing the role of the parents and caregivers in targeting physical activity and weight management in youth. Efforts must be taken in order to make sure that the types of physical activity offered are both suitable and enjoyable. Sports, games, free play and other age appropriate activities are adequate ways to increase moderate to vigorous physical activity in children. Differentiating physical activities types in accordance with developmental stage, level of enjoyment, and family characteristics is needed to establish sustainable habits. One paediatric obesity program has developed approaches to teaching families fun and engaging ways to be active together.
The worldwide expansion of users on the Internet has popularized the access of individuals to information that may not be obtained otherwise. Social media has fostered interactions between individuals and health organizations by changing the nature and speed of engagement. While it is known that many public health organizations use social media to engage their audiences, little is known about effective strategies and best practices for the dissemination of knowledge and audience engagement. Many barriers exist in the dissemination of public health messages, including limited funds to support information sharing. Blogs and social media networking sites can be dynamic, cost-effective communication tools with the potential to reach scientific, practitioner, and public audiences who may be missed through traditional outlets. This article describes rudimentary processes of developing a blog and using social media to disseminate public health information and potential applications in the day-to-day activities for other public health organizations. With the growing demand for instant communication and concise information, a strong Internet presence could help organizations maximize their reach and impact.
