-Blackberry has the potential to be grown in subtropical climates, requiring phenological studies for the indication of cultivars adapted to this type of climate. thus, the aim of this work was to evaluate the phenological behavior of four blackberry cultivars, as well as to determine the physical and chemical characteristics of fruits produced in mesothermal subtropical climate (Cfa), with more focus on the recommendation of cultivars adapted to this region. the largest production cycle and the best productions and yields were obtained for guarani cultivar and larger fruits were presented by tupy cultivar. the best relationship between titratable acidity and soluble solids was presented by Cherokee cultivar. Index terms: Rubus, phenology, postharvest, tupy, guarani, Xavante and Cherokee.
The unique chemical composition of yerba mate and its functionalities suggest that it needs to be explored for its innovation potential. New uses may boost consumption, surpassing the traditional consumption barrier, and making yerba mate accessible on a global level. Thus, to highlight the importance of yerba mate as a potential source of agro-economic resources, we present a review on its botanical, ecological, agronomic, and industrial aspects, along with information on the biochemical composition of this species and its biological activity.
Antioxidants are compounds with varied chemical structures that are affected by biotic and abiotic factors. The objective of this study was to characterize and compare bioactive compounds and the antioxidant capacity of fruit from four blackberry cultivars produced under different climatic conditions. Ascorbic acid content, total polyphenols, flavonoids, monomeric anthocyanins and antioxidant activity of the fruit were evaluated, and high levels of bioactive compounds as well as antioxidant activity were observed regardless of the cultivar or growing location. The results showed that bioactive production is affected by the cultivar and environment. Furthermore, the antioxidant potential of the blackberry fruit depends on the total phenolics and anthocyanin.
The residue from soy processing (okara) was evaluated for phenolic compounds, flavonoids, radical scavenging activity and reducing power ability. The ability of okara to decelerate the oxidation of omega-3 fatty acids caused by light exposure in a milk matrix, as well as its bioavailability after in vitro digestion, were investigated. Okara contained phenolic compounds (106.7 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/100 g) and flavonoids (32.7 mg quercetin equivalents/100 g) and showed antioxidant activity. The addition of okara to omega-3 fatty acids-enriched milk inhibited the production of conjugated dienes and malonaldehyde during 8 days of storage compared to the control (without okara), particularly at the higher (3 g/L) than lower inclusion concentrations studied (1 and 2 g/L). The bioavailability assay demonstrated that polyphenols (41 mg GAE/100 g) were still present after in vitro digestion and had antioxidant activity. Okara, which is considered a residue and is discarded, can potentially be used as an antioxidant ingredient for the enrichment of foods.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
