Since its big bang end of the nineties, commercial web service evolution faces continuous technology change, with an even higher rate than software development in general. To manage this evolution in a systematic way is quite a challenge for large global enterprises. This talk introduces the managed evolution approach of Credit Suisse AG, a global bank and one of the technology leaders in the financial industry. Quite unknown to the public, the financial industry is extremely IT dependend with a typical proportion of about 20% of all employees working to develop and run IT systems. Addditionaly, global banks run the largest commercial data centers with tenthousends of servers, databases in the petabyte range and thousands of mostly selfdeveloped applications with a typical release cycle of some months.
This paper describes how a Virtual Bank -a development and testing environment based on a purely synthetic test data base -has been established to address the challenge of protecting sensitive business and client data, while at the same time collaborating in application development and testing across country and jurisdiction borders.
